To be a suitable vessel for listening to the Dharma, possessing these three qualities, the virtues of the Dharma speaker will be seen as virtues, not as faults. Moreover, the virtues of the listener will also be seen as virtues in that person, not as faults. Therefore, if the characteristics of the vessel are incomplete, even if the spiritual friend who speaks the Dharma is very pure, they will be regarded as having faults due to the listener's faults, and the speaker's faults will also be regarded as virtues, as stated in the commentaries. Among these, being impartial means being without bias. If there is bias, it will obscure and prevent one from seeing virtues, thus one will not be able to grasp the meaning of the well-spoken words. As stated in the Madhyamaka Heart Essence: "By being tormented by bias, peace will never be realized." Like that. Bias is attachment to one's own system and hatred of others' systems. One must examine oneself for such bias and abandon it. One might think, is that enough? Even if one is impartial, if one does not have the power of intelligence to distinguish between the path of well-spoken words and the path that appears to be poorly spoken, one cannot be a suitable vessel. Therefore, one must have the intelligence to understand these two. One might think, is having just these two enough? Even if one has these two, if one listens to the Dharma like listening to a painting, one cannot be a suitable vessel. Therefore, one must have great desire for meaning. The commentary states that adding respect for the Dharma and the Dharma speaker, and trust, makes it five in total. Therefore, having great desire for the Dharma, paying close attention when listening, having great respect for the Dharma and the Dharma speaker, abandoning bad speech and adopting good speech, these are the four. The favorable condition for these four is having intelligence, and the opposing condition to be abandoned is being impartial. One should examine all the teachings that the lama can bestow in detail, and if all are present, cultivate joy. If they are not all present, one should strive to create the causes for them to be present in the future. Third, one who possesses such a vessel should examine whether the lama possesses the qualities or not, as previously explained. One should receive the kindness of the Dharma from one who possesses the qualities. Having received kindness in this way, in general, and especially for the spiritual friend who leads the mind well with the complete instructions, there are two ways to rely on them: relying on them with intention and relying on them with action. The first is divided into two: cultivating the root of faith, and remembering kindness.

One should remember and respect. Firstly, in the Dharani of the Jewel Heap, it says: "Faith arises like a mother in advance, it protects all qualities and makes them increase." This means that faith generates qualities that have not yet arisen, keeps those that have already arisen, and makes them increase more and more. In the Tenth Dharma Sutra, it also says: "What leads to liberation, faith is the supreme vehicle, therefore, a person with intelligence should follow faith. For those who do not have faith, white dharmas will not arise, just as a seed burned by fire cannot produce a blue sprout." This explains from both positive and negative perspectives that faith is the foundation of all qualities. In general, there are many kinds of faith in the Three Jewels, karma and its results, and the Four Noble Truths, but here it refers to faith in the lama. So, how should one view the lama? In the Vajrapani Empowerment Tantra, it says: "Lord of Secrets, how should a disciple view the teacher? Just as one views the Buddha, the Bhagavan." This is said in the sutra, and there are similar statements in the Mahayana sutras and Vinaya. The meaning of these words is: just as when one knows it is the Buddha, one does not have thoughts of fault-finding, but rather thoughts of admiring qualities, so too, with the lama, one should deliberately abandon all forms of fault-finding and cultivate thoughts of admiring qualities. Similarly, in that tantra, it says: "Hold the qualities of the teacher, never hold faults. Holding qualities will attain accomplishment, holding faults will not achieve anything." One should act accordingly. Like this, although the lama has more qualities, if one examines him from the perspective of his slight faults, it will become an obstacle to one's own attainment of accomplishment. Even if there are many faults, if one does not examine him from the perspective of faults, but cultivates faith from the perspective of qualities, it will become a cause for the arising of accomplishment. Therefore, if it is one's own lama, no matter how big or small the faults are, one should think about the faults of observing from the perspective of faults, generate a lot of renunciation, and thereby prevent it. If thoughts of fault-finding arise due to carelessness or increased afflictions, one should also strive to confess and restrain oneself. Having become accustomed to this, even if one sees some faults, because the mind is biased towards qualities, it will not cause obstacles to faith.
