, but rather the mental activity that is in accordance with calm abiding. As the Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra says, "World Honored One, that Bodhisattva Mahasattva, when he mentally engages with the mind that takes the object of mind as its realm, until he has not obtained physical pliancy and mental pliancy, in the meantime, what should that mental engagement be called?" Maitreya said, "It is not calm abiding, but it is said to be in accordance with the aspiration that is in accordance with calm abiding, and is called mental engagement in accordance with calm abiding." This is clearly stated in the sutra. The Ornament of the Sutras also says, "Because of his familiarity with it, he does not create appearances. From then on, his body and mind obtain great pliancy, and it is said to be with mental engagement." Here, mental engagement refers to calm abiding, as stated in the Grounds of Hearers, which will be explained below. The Intermediate Stages of Meditation also says, "Thus, having practiced calm abiding, when his body and mind have become pliant, and when his mind is free to abide on the object as he wishes, then it should be known that his calm abiding is accomplished." Here it is said that abiding on the object requires both freedom and pliancy. Therefore, the First Stages of Meditation says, "When, on that object, there is no effort, and the mind can enter as long as he wishes, then it should be known that calm abiding is complete." What is said here also refers to the state of having pliancy, because it has been clearly explained in the Intermediate Stages of Meditation. Furthermore, in the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes, the equanimity that is said to be the eight abandonments of effort is the same as the ninth abiding of mind here, but that is not enough, because it is also said that pliancy arises from it. The Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom also says, "This is when a Bodhisattva alone in a solitary place mentally engages with the meaning as he has contemplated it, abandoning the speech of the mind, and repeatedly mentally engages with the mind appearing in that way, until physical and mental pliancy have not arisen, it is a mental engagement in accordance with calm abiding, and when it arises, then it is calm abiding." This is stated very clearly, and all of these are the determination of the meaning of the Sutra Explanation of the Profound Meaning. So, the samadhi before physical and mental pliancy has arisen

If asked, which realm does this samadhi encompass? This samadhi is encompassed by the realm of desire, encompassed by any of the nine realms of the three realms, because it is not above the preliminary stage of the first dhyana. Because if one attains the preliminary stage, one must necessarily attain calm abiding. Although there is such a samadhi in the realm of desire, it is a realm that has not entered into samadhi. The reason why it is not called a realm of samadhi is that it has not been accomplished by freedom from regret, supreme joy, and great pliancy. As it is said in the 'Actualities of the Grounds': 'Why is only that called a realm of samadhi, and not the one-pointedness of the realm of desire?' This is because that samadhi is accomplished by freedom from regret, supreme joy, great pliancy, and happiness. But conduct in the realm of desire is not like that, and there is no proper mindfulness in the realm of desire. Thus it is said. Therefore, if great pliancy is not attained, even if mindfulness is not continuously cultivated, the mind will naturally go without distraction. Moreover, this samadhi, which seems to be able to merge with all activities of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, is called one-pointedness of the mind of desire. It should be understood that this cannot be considered true calm abiding. So, what is the way to attain great pliancy? And how does one enter calm abiding after attaining it? In this regard, great pliancy is: As it is said in the 'Compendium of Topics': 'What is great pliancy? It is the very ability of body and mind to sever the continuum of the afflictions of body and mind, and it has the function of eliminating all obscurations.' This should be understood. The afflictions of body and mind are: when body and mind are engaged in accomplishing virtuous deeds, they cannot be used as desired. Its antidote, great pliancy of body and mind, is: because it is free from the two afflictions of body and mind, body and mind are very capable of being used for virtuous deeds. That is, when striving to abandon afflictions, the afflictions of the body, which obstruct joy and become the side of afflictions, when striving to abandon afflictions, the body is free from heaviness and other discomforts, and the body becomes light, this is the body's
