Tranquility (Tibetan: ཞི་), A (Tibetan, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A), Ali (Tibetan: ཨཱ་ལི་), Kali (Tibetan: ཀཱ་ལི་), etc., and the condensed mantras like snakes, etc., which three letters should they be combined with? In the 'Practice Collection of Breakage and Change,' it is translated as, 'All mantras of the nature of women, men, and hermaphrodites are...' And in the 'Lamp Illuminating the Sixth Chapter,' it says, 'Mantras are those that arise from Ali Kali, and are the nature of snakes, etc. These are the basis of the three letters by women, men, and hermaphrodites themselves, so mantras are the three letters.' This appears in the two old translations. In the two new translations, it says, 'Merged into the three letters.' Also, in the 'Lamp Illuminating the Tenth Chapter,' it is said, 'Explaining that the three mantras of men, etc., should be collected into three letters is to have made the condensed mantra into three.' How do mantras become male, female, and hermaphrodite, and how are they collected into three letters? Apart from 'How is the oral instruction obtained?' it is not clearly explained in the treatises of the Five Fathers, and other explanations do not seem reliable. My own view is that one male and one female deity are each placed, and through the mantras of both, they are placed as three. All the mantra deities that are spoken of are collected into the three vajras, so all mantras are also collected into the three letters. Therefore, the three letters are the essence of all mantras, because the essence of all types of body vajra is the letter A (Tibetan, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A), so the chief of all its mantras is also the letter A (Tibetan, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A). Similarly, one should understand the other two as well. If used as a basis for condensation, then in the 'Vajra Heart Ornament Tantra,' it says, 'The twelve alis are women, the groups of ka, tsa, ta, ta, pa are men, and the four ra, la are hermaphrodites.' It should be done according to this. For the three letters, A (Tibetan, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A) is male, Ā (Tibetan, Devanagari: आ, Romanized Sanskrit: ā, Literal Chinese meaning: A) is female, and Hūṃ (Tibetan, Devanagari: हुं, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Hūṃ) is hermaphrodite, it seems necessary. Kalsang Drakpa and others believe that the first letters of the eight vowel-consonant groups are a, ka, tsa, ta, ta, pa, ya, sha, and these eight are a, ka, ya, sha, and these four are merged into the three a, ka, ya, and these three are gradually transformed into the female Ā (Tibetan, Devanagari: आ, Romanized Sanskrit: ā, Literal Chinese meaning: A), the male Hūṃ (Tibetan, Devanagari: हुं, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Hūṃ), and the hermaphrodite A (Tibetan, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A). In this way, although there are countless ways to condense mantras from the basis of condensation, here it is condensed into the three A (Tibetan, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A), Ā (Tibetan, Devanagari: आ, Romanized Sanskrit: ā, Literal Chinese meaning: A), Hūṃ (Tibetan, Devanagari: हुं, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Hūṃ), and each of them, together with the indestructible, is made of three letters.

Collecting all mantras into three letters through the method of gathering the essence is called mantra collection. The necessity of showing that all mantras are gathered into three letters is: in order to understand that the abilities to accomplish the siddhis of all other mantras are present in these three letters, therefore it is the ultimate destination of all recitations. As it is said in the tenth chapter of the root and commentary: even if the practitioner of the generation stage falls into the decline of the three actions, if he cannot achieve accomplishment, then by reciting the three mantra letters, he can awaken the heart essence of all Buddhas. As explained, the practitioner of the generation stage can accomplish all four activities through this method. If that is the case, then what need is there to mention that the Vajra recitation, which combines the recitation of the three letters of definitive meaning with the three winds without difference, has the ability to awaken the mindstream of all Buddhas and bless the practitioner with all the mantra recitations. Therefore, Vajra recitation not only has the qualities of gathering the winds into the central channel etc. from the aspect of wind yoga, but also the generation of special abilities through the method of mantra recitation is unparalleled, so it is necessary to be certain that it is different from other wind yogas. So, what can these three letters do? In the Compendium of Practices, it is said that there are two: the common way of acting for both ordinary people and yogis is: these three letters, through the order of entering, abiding, and rising, by the power of entering, maintain the existence of the body day and night; these three letters, together with the nature of semen and blood, Ali and Kali, when the two organs are combined, face downwards and emerge from the secret nostrils in the form of seeds, thereby producing the body of sentient beings; these three letters then rise upwards together with the life force, thereby awakening the doors of the senses such as the eyes. When semen and blood mix with wind and go downwards, the wind enters and exits from the lower nostrils; considering the abiding in its own place, it is said to be three letters; for the life wind going upwards, there are also some parts that remain inside, and after going out, they come back in, so it can be counted as three letters, the tone of the wind.
