Mastering the methods to counteract dullness and agitation. If dullness and agitation are very strong and occur repeatedly, then like this, if dullness and agitation occur repeatedly, mix the mind like a swan king with the emptiness and clarity of the sky, inseparable, to hold the mind. In this way, the mind will become bright and clear, and will be able to abide in the object of focus as desired. Agitation, on the other hand, is to regulate the breath and bring it into the body, so that the mind can also abide, and one can distinguish the purity and impurity of wisdom. This is the oral instruction for forcibly cutting off dullness and agitation. It is necessary to understand the object of focus on which to abide, the method of how to abide, the way in which experience arises from meditating on the object of focus, the subtle and coarse differences between dullness and agitation, and various characteristics. Second, regarding the four key points of insight meditation, and how to cultivate the method of possessing four valid cognitions, first is to determine the measure of the object to be refuted. First, observe how the thought of "I" arises in the innate wisdom. Then observe how the thought of "I" appears in the thought that thinks "this is I." After determining the way of appearance, also distinguish the way of growth of appearance and the way of arising of attachment for how the thought that thinks "this is I" holds onto "I," and then take different antidotes in sequence. The way of observing should also be done by holding onto other minds without losing the thought of "I am I." When observing in this way, first there will be two situations: the appearance and non-appearance of the aggregates. In the case of appearance, there will also be the appearance of "I" abiding in the middle of the aggregates, and the appearance of "I" appearing outside of the aggregates. In the case of non-appearance, there will also be appearances such as empty emptiness and the appearance of colors and shapes, which are not correct ways of appearance. Therefore, for this innate wisdom, "I" seems to not depend on any object, but rather appears clearly from itself. And this itself will produce a state of vagueness, obscurity, clear ability, confusion, and seeming to change no matter what it is combined with. This appearance is also short-lived and does not last long. Moreover, this appearance also appears like a memory that grows and gradually forms together with that mind. In this way of appearance, there will also be two ways of appearance: the aggregates and "I" are one and different. For example, "I am in" and "my hand is in," and so on. Like this, distinguishing without abandoning the innate appearance is the attachment to "I." And the thought of "I am I" is the thought of "I go, I stay," and so on.

So! If the way of appearance is ascertained and it is established as such, then it becomes a state that cannot go beyond being either one with or different from the aggregates (Sanskrit, Skandha, स्कन्ध, heap), and contemplating the state where being one and different is harmful to sleep. If it is clearly determined that the appearance of "I" is not established in that way, then continuously training in this clear certainty-wisdom is the key to the way of training. At that time, it is not about newly establishing an object of negation and then thinking that it does not exist in that way, but rather, first clarifying the object of negation, and then focusing single-pointedly on the non-affirming negation that clearly arises from the certainty of "it is not like that." This is done with four key points: first, determining the object of negation; second, determining the pervasion; third, determining the property; and fourth, determining the object to be established. If divided into four valid cognitions, they are: the valid cognition that ascertains the way the object of negation appears; the valid cognition that ascertains either one and otherness; the valid cognition that ascertains the non-establishment of oneness; and the valid cognition that ascertains the non-establishment of otherness. To distinguish this, one needs to be skilled in the two ways of operating, simultaneous and subsequent. Although through antidotes, if the valid cognition of the first key point is ascertained, obstacles will not arise, the fear of falling into the danger of nihilism can be eliminated by the flawless appearance of the subsequent attainment. If emptiness is meditated upon as an extreme of nihilism, it will become meditating on the view of permanence with true existence, therefore it should be combined with wisdom and meditated upon inseparably. Regarding the way "I" appears, if one thinks about the way this general consciousness appears as "I am," then something like hail suddenly descending together with that consciousness will appear. If it is established as it appears, then it is certain that it is established as either one with or different from the eyes, ears, etc. If it is established as one, then otherness will completely disappear, therefore the eyes will also become hearing sounds, and the ears will also become seeing forms, etc. If it is established as other, then that consciousness that thinks "I am" will enjoy the objects, and the happiness of "I" will not become the goal to be achieved, therefore such certainty should be drawn out and the practice should be done as before. Then observe the way consciousness appears, it will appear as a solid thing that can independently use objects. Regarding how to draw out this certainty and the way of practice, simultaneous and subsequent, etc., are all the same as before. Then fix it on the aggregates contained by one's own continuum and meditate. Then there are other individuals, and all phenomena not contained by the continuum.
