If these fourteen vows of the mantra practitioner are kept without violation, then the common accomplishments of pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, and wrathful actions will be achieved, as well as the accomplishment of medicinal pills, etc. Furthermore, the uncommon accomplishment of the state of Mahamudra will be attained and obtained. The faults are: If one regards other vows as superior to these fourteen that have been properly proclaimed, and does not keep them, then the vows will be broken. Once broken, one will be seized by demons and rakshasas, etc. In this life, diseases and the taking of life, etc., and countless unpleasant things will arise, and one will experience various sufferings. Immediately after death, one will fall headfirst into hell. Third, the actual method of guarding is: Therefore, these two lines of verse say that if one guards, the benefits are immeasurable, and if one does not guard, all faults will arise. Therefore, destroy all the doors of faults, the inverted arrogance, and establish oneself in mindfulness and awareness, and diligence. One must know the method of guarding with effort. Second, if one violates, the method of remedy is: Equally, etc., these two lines of verse. If a root downfall occurs and one violates, do not let the mind wander outward, but remain single-pointedly absorbed. Exhaust whatever respect one has for the lama, make vast offerings, and starting from refuge, a mantra practitioner who wants me to hold the uncommon mantra vows well, and who wants to benefit, should take them with great effort. Third, the activity of completing the explanation is: Vajra, etc. The Vajrayana only enters the Mantrayana, but here it refers to the unsurpassed. Now, I will explain the method of guarding the mind for them. Remember the places where downfalls occur, as they arise from the occasion of collecting those kinds. The method of guarding the mind from the first root downfall is: cultivating respect, cultivating joy, and following instructions. The first is not thinking of faults, and generating the mind that holds them to be virtuous. The first is to prevent the thought of wanting to think of faults, and if the thought of thinking of faults arises, do not accept it, but rely on the antidote to prevent it. The second is: At the very least, how is it if one grasps virtue as virtue?

One should refrain from even thinking, "There's no point in doing anything." Secondly, do not abandon the responsibility of pleasing (the guru) with your thoughts, and refrain from easily abandoning pleasing (the guru) with actions when you are capable. If it does not accord with the Dharma, or if it is impossible to do, then one should strive to study and practice diligently. The same understanding should be applied to following instructions. The key to all of this is: all Tathagatas rely on the guru, and one should regard the guru as the source of all good qualities, abandon the thought of finding fault with the guru, strive to please the guru, and act according to the instructions, for in this way, accomplishments will arise. Conversely, wrong views will only increase decline. Therefore, those who wish to improve themselves should contemplate the aforementioned benefits and drawbacks, and strive to protect the aforementioned state of mind towards virtuous friends who are connected to the Dharma. If you strive in this way, the first root downfall will be avoided. If you prevent the fabrication and disparagement of the Dharma, the second fault will be avoided. If you prevent criticizing those who merely speak about the Dharma, prevent cutting off the Dharma-based shares of Vajra brothers and sisters that are specifically assigned to oneself, prevent criticizing, and prevent anger towards anyone, then the third and half of the fourth root downfalls will be avoided. If you prevent criticizing the Dharma and those who speak about the Dharma, or prevent those who were not initially displeased, or prevent those who were initially pleased from disliking it from the beginning, then the twelfth and sixth root downfalls will be avoided. If you prevent associating with evil friends who harm the guru, etc., then the tenth root downfall will be avoided. If you prevent thinking that you will not bestow permanent benefit on any sentient being, then half of the fourth root downfall will be avoided. Without a special need, if you prevent extracting the Kunda (Sanskrit: Kundā, literally: jasmine) from the body, and prevent thinking that one should not abandon the Buddha, then the fifth root downfall will be avoided. If you prevent proclaiming the aforementioned secrets to sentient beings who are not suitable vessels, then the seventh root downfall will be avoided. If you prevent feeling discouraged thinking that you cannot practice the secret mantra with your own body, prevent thinking that it is unreasonable to contemplate the aggregates as deities for some reason, and prevent tormenting the body without a special need, then the eighth root downfall will be avoided. If you prevent abandoning emptiness and accepting elaborations, then the ninth root downfall will be avoided. If one has gained any view of the selflessness of Dharma and persons,
