Even if there is no actual body, collect some good paintings, observe their forms, and form a general concept in your mind, allowing the images of the sun and light to become familiar in your mind, thereby manifesting the deity's form with radiance. Reflect the image of sunlight shining on the Thangka in a mirror and make it a habit. Initially, when the rough general concept, that is, the shape of the body, just appears, do not analyze it, be content with just that for the time being, and expand it. Then gradually make it clear. When the details of the body, such as facial expressions, are clear, focus on it. Even if it becomes unclear, keep it roughly clear. In short, when both the clear image and the firm pride appear in the mind at any time, it will appear; when you do not want to make it clear, it will not appear; the size, shape, etc. of the body, by measuring and meditating on it yourself, it will appear as you wish, and it is necessary to maintain this state for a long time. For beginners, the faults of dullness and agitation, the boundary between knowing and not knowing, the faults and merits of tension and relaxation, the boundary of moderate tension and relaxation, the difference between obtaining and not obtaining the object of focus, the degree to which pride can be transferred, whether the coarseness and fineness of dullness and agitation can be recognized, etc., all need to be well taught by the guru, and the disciple must also recognize these through practicing the object of focus. First, familiarize yourself mainly with the principal deity with one face and two arms, without any ornaments or clothes. When it appears, gradually clarify the remaining faces and arms, as well as clothes and ornaments, etc., and make them familiar. When the main deity is fully manifested, add one or two attendant deities and meditate. Then, gradually generate clear appearances for the entire mandala of the support and the supported, and this is done by adding the latter on top of the former being clear, rather than abandoning the former to meditate on the latter, because it is necessary to generate clear appearances for everything simultaneously. In this way, from the head to the feet of the deity, gradually perform the analytical meditation of clarifying, and then perform the abiding meditation of focusing on the main deity and the consort, and the entire general concept of the support and the supported should also be repeatedly clarified and meditated upon, so that initially a clear image will not appear, but only pride, and then when dusk falls

As seen, in those places where the deities reside, only a dark, smoky haze appears like a high fog, and then, having placed thangkas and so forth as objects of focus, remembering their forms, and meditating for a long time, all the deities appear with clear, coarse forms, such as the color of their bodies and the shapes of their faces and hands. Then, grasping the general meaning of fire and sunlight, and so forth, meditate on those deities' bodies as having the appearance of blazing rays of light. Carefully ascertain the ornaments and hand implements, and so forth, such as Vairochana, Buddha Eye Mother, and Yama, Lord of Death, if the coarse forms of their respective postures and bodies appear clearly, then it will not be possible for others to not be encompassed by the forms of those three, so do it in that way, and through the power of habituation, the support and supported of the thirty-two deities will be very clear, and will appear as desired, but if you cannot make them clear in an instant, then you are a beginner. Then, if you can make the coarse mandala clear in an instant, but cannot do so with the deities of the sense bases, then a little wisdom has descended. If even the deities of the sense bases appear clearly in an instant, and come as desired, then you have a little control over wisdom. Thus, when the deities appear clearly, in order to make the mind very stable, meditate on the subtle. In the first two stages, meditate on the hand implements and subtle bindus at the tips of the upper and lower parts, and the abiding will become very stable. Therefore, having completely perfected the recitation of the number, and having accomplished the attainments that rely on substances and mantras, according to the ritual described in the tantras, you will accomplish whatever you desire. In the third stage, meditate on all the support and supported within the subtle, and by doing much expansion and contraction, you will draw out a powerful meditative equipoise of analysis, and it will also transform into a union of calm and insight. At this time, the yogi, in a place without concealment, meditating on the palace, will be able to withstand water. Meditating on a great river as vajra dust particles, you will be able to walk on it without sinking. Imagining a jewel staircase in the sky, you will be able to climb it, and so forth, these things will occur, and such a yogi, it is said, will accomplish all attainments through meditative equipoise, without relying on substances and mantras. If it is common
