One should generate a strong conviction in the object, because it is necessary to have both the appearance of clarity and the holding of pride. First, how to reasonably divide into sections, from beginning to end, without letting the mind fall into dullness and agitation, for whatever object of meditation, strive to keep the mind continuously engaged without interruption, and gradually lengthen it, until finally each session from beginning to end, dullness and agitation cannot interrupt. At that time, because one has not meditated for a long time, the power of the mind has not yet increased, so most of the time it may not be possible to see clearly, but because faith is most important, one should especially meditate with faith as the main thing. As it is said in the commentary on the Four Hundred and Fifty Verses: "These three yogas are especially based on faith, not on appearance, because the time is short or small. Therefore, it is said to be especially based on faith." Just as it is said. Both appearance and pride need to be separately examined and cultivated by the wisdom of discernment, so that they gradually arise, and one should not rely on experience to arise suddenly, because The standard of competence in the generation stage is that whatever clarity one has created will appear, and what one has not created will not appear, and the degree of clarity one has created will not exceed the scope of what appears. If it is a situation mixed with experience, if it is placed under such a standard, it cannot withstand examination. Therefore, if one sets a goal in advance, thinking, "I will meditate in this way," and then creates clarity, if one can appear without any deviation from that standard, then such meditation is competent. However, even if one sets a standard from the beginning, one cannot reach the point, and only when the mind becomes very familiar can one do so, and the same principle should be applied to pride. The reason why this needs to be done is that, for example, when meditating on impermanence and compassion, one also cultivates by combining one's own object and aspect, and if it is an experience that arises gradually, then whenever one wants, one can meditate by clarifying the object and aspect. But when it is mixed with experience, and these strong thoughts suddenly arise, it is as if one has no place to arise at will. In general, the necessity of the generation stage is not only when one visualizes oneself as a deity, transforming pride and appearance into a special state, if it is only this, then the lower tantras
