It is said that among the teachings of Padampa Sangye, the most important are Long Flight and Remaining Enjoyment. Although he manifested the state of a meditation master of the peak of existence, he knew that meditation and enjoyment were not the path to liberation from the suffering of samsara. Therefore, on the banks of the Nairanjana River, together with the Five Excellent Ones, he spent the first two years eating only one grain of rice a day, the middle two years drinking only one drop of water a day, and the last two years eating nothing at all, practicing ascetic meditation for six years. At that time, the gods urged him with verses, and the Buddhas of the ten directions and their retinues also urged him to awaken from the inferior path and to strive for the essence of enlightenment. Later, in order to relieve his fatigue, he consumed some coarse food, which displeased the Five Excellent Ones, and they went to Varanasi. After that, on the way to Magadha Vajrasana (Bodh Gaya), a Brahmin girl named Lekshyasena offered him milk gruel made from the milk of five hundred cows, and his body became as radiant as a polished golden pillar, and he did not waste that merit. On the way, he received a handful of soft, peacock-neck-like auspicious grass from a grass seller named Tashi, and arrived at Vajrasana. Through the blessings of all the Buddhas, at the self-arisen Vajrasana under the Bodhi tree, he sat cross-legged on the grass mat and vowed: Even if my body withers and dies on this seat, even if my skin, flesh, bones, and all my parts decay, I will not rise from this seat until I attain enlightenment, which is difficult to find in hundreds of thousands of eons! Thus, with a firm vow, in the evening he entered the meditation of subduing the Maras. He illuminated with light, shaking and subduing all the places of the Maras. The evil Mara appeared in the guise of a hunter and came, violently oppressing the Shakya clan, destroying the palace, and saying with contempt: Why are you here? He replied: In order to attain perfect enlightenment. The Mara said: Attaining perfect enlightenment requires accumulating immeasurable merit and resources, and you are just a comfortable and happy prince. The Bodhisattva replied: Your unfounded

If just one act of generosity can obtain dominion over the desire realm, why can't I attain enlightenment, having perfected the two accumulations for countless eons? The Joyful Sovereign snapped his fingers twice and said: I have no permanent offerings here. You are the witness to what has been done, do you have any other witnesses here? Even if you speak, you have no witness, you are destined to fail. Having said that, the Bodhisattva pressed his hand, made of a hundred merits, on the ground and said: This earth is the dwelling place of all beings, equal whether there is a cause or no cause, without partiality. This is my witness, I have not lied. Let it be my witness! As soon as he said this, the earth goddess, the steadfast mother, half of her body like pure gold emerged from the earth, holding a single mote of dust, and said: I can count this portion of this great earth circle, but I cannot count the giving of his head and limbs by this son of good family, so the time for him to attain complete enlightenment has come. Having said this, she disappeared. The evil demon was extremely ashamed and crestfallen, and returned to his own abode. Having returned, he also summoned billions of demon armies, and set up a battlefield, causing fear and dread to those who had illusory rather than supreme wisdom. In this way, for those who have conquered the enemy of afflictions and see the nature of mind as being like the sky, the magical weapons of the army of demons are unable to harm them. The Bodhisattva had no thoughts of anger or arrogance. Abiding in the samadhi of great loving-kindness, the weapons that were thrown became a rain of flowers, and the unpleasant sounds became the nature of songs of praise. The deceitful army, along with the poisonous tree of desire, fell; the flowers of the five arrows withered; the rock of pride crumbled; the asceticism of war was degraded; the banner of the makara fish set in the west; and the chariot of remembrance was in such a hurry to flee that its head also wandered into a state of confusion. Again, he transformed his seven daughters into beautiful forms, pretending to be amorous in order to deceive the Bodhisattva, displaying the transformations of the white lotus, hanging the necklaces of Mainaka,
