Entering the gate (of Dharma) is attained through one's own merit; even if entered, without relying on the excellent spiritual friend, one cannot understand the true nature of Dharma, while relying on the spiritual friend is relying on additional compassion. These five depend on other conditions to be complete, so they are called the 'five external endowments.' Thus, if all eighteen are complete, it is a basis for practicing the sacred Dharma, so it is called a 'precious human body.' If even one of them is lacking, one cannot truly walk the path to liberation, so it is called an 'ordinary human body.' Therefore, one should rejoice that one can be called a precious human body, starting from the present moment, and be cautious not to diminish the eighteen qualities of leisure and endowment due to reversed karma, diminished faith, and so on, which is crucial. Such (a human body with leisure and endowment) is not easily obtained in the future, so if the leisure and endowment obtained now are not utilized meaningfully, when one falls back into the lower realms in the future, one will not be able to distinguish between good and evil. Even if one obtains a good rebirth, it will be difficult to meet a spiritual friend, and whatever one does will turn into evil, so if one does not recognize this flaw of being unable to escape the suffering of samsara, one should think from the bottom of one's heart, 'How foolish I am!' Even in cities and large marketplaces, one should carefully observe how many precious human bodies have all eighteen qualities complete, and repeatedly contemplate how difficult it is to obtain from one's own perspective. Third, contemplating the analogy of the difficulty of obtaining: On the ocean churned by great waves, a yoke with a single hole floats unstably. In the depths of the ocean, there is a blind turtle that surfaces once every hundred years, and when it surfaces, its neck happens to fit through the hole in the yoke. Obtaining a human body is even more difficult than that, so said the Thus-Gone-One. Fourth, contemplating the difference in numbers: If one looks at the number and levels of sentient beings, the chance of obtaining a human body is extremely rare. For example, the beings in hell are as numerous as the stars at night, and the beings in the hungry ghost realm are as numerous as the stars in the daytime. The beings in the hungry ghost realm are as numerous as the stars at night, and the beings in the animal realm are as numerous as the stars in the daytime. The beings in the animal realm are as numerous as the stars at night, while the beings in the happy realms are as few as the stars in the daytime. This situation can be understood by observing how many parasites live inside and outside a single human body. Moreover, even among humans, there are those who are separated from the light of Dharma and those who have fallen away from Dharma.

Judging by the standards, those who practice according to the Dharma are very few. Generally speaking, it is difficult to obtain a human body, and especially difficult to obtain a body with the conditions for practicing the Dharma. We should think about this carefully and generate a definite understanding of the difficulty of obtaining leisure and opportunity. Second, contemplate the impermanence of life. First, contemplate impermanence by contemplating the outer world: Like this, the solid and stable world, including the four continents, Mount Sumeru, and the abodes of the gods, although it can exist for a long time, when it finally faces destruction, it will be destroyed by seven suns and one flood, and not even dust will remain. We should contemplate this and generate renunciation. Second, contemplate the impermanence of sentient beings: Even the gods and sages who live for a kalpa and are full of glory cannot escape death. We people of Jambudvipa, born at the end of an era when life is uncertain, will soon die. The ruins of towns and monasteries that were once prosperous and flourishing also had their own good masters in the beginning, but now they have become nests for birds. Most of the parents, relatives, neighbors, livestock, etc., that one can recall with a little thought are no longer there. Look at the situation where those who were still there last year are no longer there this year. Especially now, although one adorns one's own body, limbs, etc., with good clothes and ornaments, and one's behavior is also cautious, the days and nights pass, and life is short. Before long, death will come, the breath will be rapid, the radiance will fade, the limbs will tremble, the consciousness will be confused, one will become numb to taste, then one will be bound with ropes, covered with cloth, and thrown naked into the charnel ground, the limbs will be dismembered, devoured by vultures and wild beasts, and when the hair and bones are scattered everywhere, relatives and wealth will not follow, and thoughts will not be taken away. Only karma will follow. At that time, one cannot even be sure whether it will happen within today. Thinking of this, one feels it is unbearable. One should remember with strong intention, and whether walking, sitting, or lying down, one should think that this is the last act of this life, and one should also recite it in one's mouth and visualize it clearly in one's mind. The third topic is contemplating the faults of samsara, which is divided into general and specific. First, the general aspect is like this, samsara...
