Thus, after dying, like the custom of throwing away a naked corpse, or like a lamp extinguished, one might think that the mind also dies. Even if one thinks that being able to transfer from here to there is freedom, that's fine. If the karma is good, everything is like the outside, and one must accept that it doesn't necessarily arise from the fruit. That is, driven by hatred, one commits the ten non-virtuous actions, starting with killing, and accumulates negative karma in special places, which leads to falling into hell. Driven by desire, one accumulates sins, which leads to being reborn as an animal. Accumulating meritorious deeds with outflows leads to being reborn in the heavens. Therefore, one should not waste in the bardo whatever karmic results have not been accumulated by one's own actions, or the path of accumulation has been made. When the causes and conditions come together and the time is ripe, no one will experience it on one's behalf. Just like a rope falling straight down from the sky, it will infallibly descend upon oneself. Therefore, one should always examine the virtues and faults of one's own three doors of body, speech, and mind. If one finds that it is virtuous, one should joyfully cultivate it as a cause for liberation. In order not to let it diminish, one should not leave it unattended, but for the benefit of all sentient beings, one should expand it with dedication free from concepts. For non-virtuous deeds, one should confess with strong remorse, and keep the vows that should be kept. Just as Atisha said, one should not spend even one night with sins and transgressions, but strive to correct them. From now on, whenever an unwholesome thought arises, one should immediately destroy it, cut off its root, and make a strong determination not to let it prevail, and one should also pay great attention to even the smallest karmic results. Fourth, contemplating the faults of samsara: Alas! Son of noble family. In this way, the force of karmic attraction is very strong. Once one has taken this contaminated aggregate, there is no choice but to endure the present suffering and draw in future suffering. If one is reborn in the lower realms, there are eight hot hells, eight cold hells, and two kinds of neighboring and surrounding hells, making a total of eighteen. If one were to personally experience those sufferings, what more needs to be said? Even now, when you see them painted in pictures, doesn't your heart tremble? If one is reborn as a hungry ghost, molten iron liquid is poured into the mouth, burning all the internal organs, or one is boiled in a huge pot, or one's body is chopped into pieces with burning saws and axes, etc. How can one endure it? Now, the short

How can merely a thorn prick and slight pain be called excruciating? If born in the cold hells, one is plunged into the unbearable depths of snowstorms, hailstorms, and blizzards, with the body splitting into pieces, and immeasurable suffering. Even just wading through water, one feels as if one's feet are about to crack open with pain. If born as a hungry ghost, there are times when one cannot find even a drop of water for five hundred years, calculated in human months. Even if one finds it, it cannot pass through the throat, or one is burned by the fire blazing within, or one's feet cannot support the body, and so on, with unbearable suffering. How is it now for us, just eating a little earlier or later? If born as an animal, there are two kinds of animals, whose primary dwelling is in the outer ocean, where they devour each other. Even those who carry heavy loads are whipped, have their noses pierced, their flesh cut, and are slaughtered. In short, birds flying in the sky and creatures crawling on the ground, whether strong or weak, are hunted. When they see humans, they feel as if they are seeing an executioner, and they suffer the fear of being killed, captured, and beaten, which is said to be a hundred times greater than that of humans. Similarly, gods suffer the pain of long life and decline, demigods suffer the pain of fighting, and humans suffer the pain of birth, old age, sickness, and death. All of these appear as a common experience. Even if one abandons these and is born as Brahma or Indra, or a universal monarch, one only temporarily experiences a mixture of happiness and suffering, and then falls back down, suffering like a slave of samsara. Therefore, contemplating each of these sufferings, like being trapped in a pit of fire, a prison, or a swamp of excrement and urine, one should think of escaping from this immediately, and one must firmly integrate this determination into one's being. Be sure to strive! This is the advice. Second, the uncommon preliminary practices. The root text says: "Uncommon refuge and bodhicitta, Vajrasattva practice and recitation, and mandala guru yoga, practice correctly." Among these, first is refuge and bodhicitta. O son of noble family, the only ones who have the compassion and power to protect from such samsara are the Three Jewels. Taking the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the path, and the Sangha as the companions on the path, one must be liberated from the ocean of samsara. Moreover, the ultimate refuge is only the Buddha, and no other.
