Because there is no difference, and because there is a lineage, all sentient beings constantly possess the essence of the Tathagata. As stated in the Root Verses: "The nature of the Tathagata is the nature of these beings." Although there are many debates about what is definitive and what is not, just as a fish is comfortable in water, merely seeing the convenience of words in the path of speech does not mean one sees the nature of the essence in the ultimate meaning. As the Sutra of the Essence of the Buddha says: "Neither ordinary beings, nor Shravakas, nor Pratyekabuddhas, nor Bodhisattvas see the essence of the Buddha as it is. For example, a blind person asks another about the color of butter. The other replies, 'It is like snow.' The blind person touches the snow and perceives the color of butter as cold. He asks, 'It is like a swan's wing.' Hearing the sound of a swan's wing, he perceives the color of snow as noisy. He asks, 'What is the color of the wing?' The other replies, 'It is like a conch shell.' Touching the conch shell, he feels it is smooth, and so he perceives the color of butter as smooth. No matter how he is told, the blind person does not know the color as it is. Likewise, the nature of the Buddha is very difficult to see." This difficulty is nothing other than the clinging to the five aggregates. Therefore, when one transcends the eight consciousnesses and directly sees the wisdom of the noble ones without any acceptance or rejection, then one understands that the profound definitive sutras all abide in the same intention. As the Sutra of the Moon Lamp says: "The realms of the world are pure. Whatever sutras I have spoken, the words and phrases are different, but the meaning is the same. It is not possible to express everything. If one meditates on one phrase, one will meditate on all of them. All the Buddhas have extensively taught many dharmas, but all dharmas are emptiness. Whoever is skilled in the meaning, by learning from this phrase, the Buddha's dharmas are not difficult to obtain." Likewise, depending on the three stages of guiding disciples, the Sutra Requested by the King of Dharani Powers says: "Son of lineage, for example, a skilled jeweler who knows well how to purify jewels takes an impure jewel from the lineage of precious jewels, washes it with strong salt water, and with a hair of
