If one thinks that focusing mainly on external forms and neglecting inner practice will lead to failure, then this is indeed the case for those who are not skilled in skillful means and lack the view of wisdom. For example, a tongue without the blessing of mantra is like being burned by red-hot iron. However, in truth, just as one deals with poison, the combination of skillful means and wisdom is the key, and there is no conflict. As Āryadeva said, "Those who wish to abandon all defilements should seek with the supreme meaning." The main practice at different stages is: Generally, from the beginner to the Lord of Yoga, one should practice in accordance with one's own experience, in conjunction with time. In the Sangha, one should act with the five Samantabhadra practices, which are without fault and with a sense of shame. Among them, a pure place refers to monasteries and remote areas. Pure livelihood refers to the Dharma that is not mixed with wrong livelihood. Pure discipline means that for beginners, the Pratimoksha vows are the main focus, and then gradually, with the increase of great compassion, skill in means, complete non-arising in the ultimate truth, and the power of wisdom without substance, the needs of higher levels are accomplished as the main goal, and the three—Bodhisattva, Vidyadhara—are not tainted by faults. Pure friends refer to those who possess qualities equal to the guru. Pure Dharma refers to the Dharma that is grasped by emptiness and compassion. As stated in the Guhyasamaja Tantra, "Outwardly maintain the conduct of the Shravakas, inwardly delight in the meaning of the Guhyasamaja." The fully enlightened Buddha Padmasambhava also holds this view. During secret practice, for the downfalls that have not yet fully gathered, they should be guarded completely and thoroughly without mixing. When learning taming or asceticism, the mantra is mainly guarded. It is not that the lower aspects should be particularly disparaged, but under the guidance of higher-level skillful means and wisdom, the vows of the Shravakas are forms that transcend discriminative consciousness, so downfalls are also forms. Even so, in order to avoid the distrust of the world, the parts that are the same in the two sets of vows should still be guarded as they are. As stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, "Those aspects that cause the world to lose faith should be abandoned through observation and familiarity." In summary, for beginners, those who have entered the right path, those who have attained accomplishment, and the omniscient ones...

In the Kalachakra Great Commentary, it says that one should not mix up the practices of those different stages, but should adopt and abandon them accordingly. Therefore, a beginner should not do the actions of a yogi, a yogi should not do the actions of an accomplished one, and an accomplished one should not do the actions of an omniscient one. This is regarded as a sutra or precept for the times. Now, in order to dissect the tenets of the philosophical schools and explain the transformation of essence, for those who have engaged in examining the views of accomplishment: Those who believe that transformation and essence are one, those who believe that one thing has different bases, those who believe that all three are contradictory in nature and increase, those who distinguish from the point of giving up and gaining, those who believe that they are unmixed like a stacked mound, and like the sun, moon, and stars gathering in sequence, they believe that the difference in ability enters without diminishing their own light. If these different views are examined and analyzed with the motivations that each of their previous sides aroused, then the nature of wisdom will follow speculation, and words will be applied in the same way as examples. Although it does not reach an extreme, the teachings of the Thus-Gone One are endowed with the four reliances. Even so, for the time being, while the minds of beings exist, the philosophical schools also engage in relation to them. Therefore, the view that transformation and essence are one can liberate the continuum through the realization of the Great Perfection, because precepts and non-precepts arise from clinging to things. Therefore, the Bhagavan said: Through wisdom, one obtains pure wisdom, and through pure wisdom, one perfects discipline. However, for a beginner who has become dependent on consciousness, it is unreasonable to replace the superior with the inferior, just as melting copper ore yields copper, pouring in brass ore yields brass, and pouring in lead ore yields tin, because examples follow the conventional. Therefore, for those who have object fixation and conceptual thought, the rain of downfall will fall. Also, that one thing has different bases, although the meaning of wisdom is the same, the bases are established as different from the aspect of concepts, just as the instructions of the Middle Way say: If analyzed by reason, it is not true; other than that, it is true; therefore, how can truth and untruth contradict each other in one thing? This is the same. That all three are contradictory in nature and increase.
