Training in exchanging happiness and the suffering of sentient beings is the supreme method for developing the mind of enlightenment. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "If one does not completely exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not attain Buddhahood, and even in samsara there will be no happiness. Let alone the next world! If one does not act as a servant to the master, and does not offer rewards to the master, then even the affairs of this life will not be accomplished." Therefore, in the beginning, just as one likes to be perfect, so do other sentient beings; just as one does not want to suffer, so do other sentient beings. Therefore, seeing that protecting oneself and abandoning others is not good, one should view self and others as equal. One should become accustomed to this, and take all sentient beings into one's own care, and at every moment when one exhales one's own happiness, one should contemplate giving that happiness to others. When inhaling, one should contemplate taking in the suffering of others along with oneself, and practice this giving and taking. As it was said before: "With an army free from laziness, gladly accepting self-control, viewing self and others as equal, exchange self and others." Thus, when contemplating the great deeds of a Bodhisattva, if one is afraid and lazy because one thinks that one is not able to do it, then one should generate courage like a swallow building a nest on a rock. One should gladly accept it like a peacock cherishing its feathers. One should control oneself like an eagle soaring in the sky. Having done so, in the past one regarded all sentient beings as parents, but did not strive for their sake, and the actions of employing others for one's own benefit, etc., have led to being enslaved by kings and others even now. Therefore, now one should aspire to benefit other beings, and train in subduing oneself with joy, and not separating from the increasing mind of enlightenment. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "If one harms others for one's own sake, one will suffer in hell and other places. If one harms oneself for the sake of others, one will obtain all perfections. He who desires to exalt himself will fall into evil destinies, become ugly and foolish. Transfer this to others."

If you do, you will gradually attain the happy realms. If you employ others for your own sake, you will experience being a slave and so on. If you employ yourself for the sake of others, you will experience being a lord and so on. All the happiness in the world arises from desiring happiness for others. All the suffering in the world arises from desiring happiness for oneself. What need is there to say much? Look at the difference between a child who only works for himself, and the Buddha who acts for the sake of others. You should train your mind well in these teachings. Such training also abides in the nature of the four immeasurables, and the beginning of the four also arises from repaying kindness, and from that, the way they gradually become like cause and effect. The four immeasurables of aspiration are also: from repaying kindness, loving-kindness arises; from loving-kindness, compassion arises; from compassion, the mind of enlightenment arises; the arising is the true accomplishment of the scripture of measure. On this, the Bengali Pandit considered that knowing the mother, remembering kindness, repaying kindness, pleasing loving-kindness, pure higher intention, affectionate great compassion, and one's own unsurpassed fruit, are the seven-fold causal precepts. Therefore, having regarded all sentient beings as mothers, the way to remember their kindness: like a newly born wretched person, the mother uses her lap as a bathroom, touches all impurities with her hands, serves with milk, and covers with bodily contact. She would rather die herself than have her child be sick, and is able to endure all sins, sufferings, and evil words. If one is ungrateful, what could be worse than that? Thus it is said. Then, by what reason do we know that all sentient beings have been my parents? In the Sutra of the Great Nirvana of the Blessed One, it says: If this great earth were made into balls the size of peas, and if one were to count the number of times a sentient being has been my parent, this great earth would be exhausted, but the number of times a sentient being has been a parent would not be exhausted. Thus it is said. Thus, sentient beings who have not been mothers, newly born sentient beings are very weak, like the form of a worm or a small insect, the limbs and branches are not yet complete, feelings appear as pleasure and pain, but the power of the senses is weakened, the face is not pleasing to look at, but like a broken vase.
