In the past, King Shaniba lit a thousand butter lamps on his body to hear a single four-word Dharma phrase; King Galing hammered a thousand iron nails into his body to hear the Dharma. Contemplating their diligence, the Able One (Shakyamuni Buddha) said: The appearance of the Tathagata is rare. Being born as a human is extremely rare. Obtaining a leisure and endowed human body is rare. Generating faith in the Tathagata's teachings is rare. Therefore, one should always contemplate the faults of samsara and listen to the Dharma with reverence. Why? It should be explained here that the true Dharma will surely decline, and the light of the Dharma will be lost. The light of wisdom will completely fade, and one will not encounter virtuous friends. An extremely terrifying time is approaching, and one will associate with sentient beings who do not possess the Dharma. Therefore, one should listen to the Dharma with reverence. One must listen to these reasons with alertness and concentration. The five faults of non-attachment are: Although it is said that one should not be attached to words but focus on the meaning, if the words are wrong, the meaning will also be wrong. Therefore, one should rely on words to understand the meaning. Not being attached to the meaning refers to some people who only cling to words. If one does not contemplate the meaning expressed by the words, it is like the Bhikshu Devadatta, who, although he could memorize many pitakas, did not understand their meaning. Grasping without understanding the language means that, taking this treatise as an example, the meaning is named "Treasury of Qualities," and the metaphor is named "Chariot of the Two Truths." Moreover, the Fruition Vehicle (Fruition Vajrayana) is pure equality and great bliss, so in the treatise where omniscient wisdom is named "Chariot," if someone spends a long time listening, thinking, and meditating but does not strive to easily understand the methods within, they will lose the necessary meaning of achieving temporary and ultimate benefits. Similarly, if the basis of view, the practice of the path, and the behavior of companions are fully and accurately explained, then the concise meaning of the scriptures and the meaning of the thirteen chapters of the text are extensively explained by the commentary. The connection between the beginning and the end, when a person enters the path of practice, the foundation of the Dharma is explained in detail from the first chapter to the tenth chapter, and the last three chapters then

Just like that, by showing the uncommon aspects of the three—basis, path, and result—of the Great Perfection, it is the most essential necessity; by including the remaining debates and answers, it is important to establish one's own tenets for those who cannot distinguish the differences between words and meanings. These, if applied to the situation of the speaker, are the wisdom of exposition. For those who wish to speak on the meaning of the scriptures, give a little pith instruction. So, the pith instruction is like this: one should explain the meaning that includes the summary of the necessity, includes debates and answers, includes connections, and includes words and meanings. That is its meaning. To misunderstand is: although it is said that the tradition, root, and path of the teachings have been established, they cling to small instructions and are unwilling to measure the breadth and depth of the meaning of the Dharma. To understand incompletely is: what is important is considered agreeable, and what is agreeable is accepted; for the small and difficult points, they become lazy, so they do not fully accept the whole body of the teachings, thus it is of no benefit to oneself or others. Therefore, just as a bee tastes the essence of a flower, it is indispensable to be eager to approach the practice of listening to the Dharma that will arise from below. From beginningless time, afflicted by the plague of birth, old age, sickness, and death, like the taste of great medicine nectar. Forsaking the excellent Dharma that is in hand, how should I advise such people? Having said this, he speaks of the faults of not accepting the excellent Dharma: like this, birth arises from the four ways, such as from the womb. Old age is the change of age. Sickness is the imbalance of the elements. Death is abandoning life. Like this, from beginningless time, afflicted by a very severe plague, making the world terrible. But, for its antidote, the great medicine nectar of the excellent Dharma, they do not listen, do not use thought to manifest, do not use meditation to grasp, that fault is like a person afflicted by a severe disease who avoids the doctor and wanders aimlessly in the wilderness. As it says in the *Letter to a Friend*: 'Whoever does not obtain the nectar that cures birth, old age, sickness, and death, does not practice or realize it, they are obscured by much sin and ignorance, like being afflicted by a long illness and not relying on a good doctor.' In particular, for the one eye that goes to the path of liberation, distinguishing between the path and the non-path.
