It is said that the Buddha once asked whether a blind sea turtle floating in the vast ocean could extend its neck into a yoke with only one hole. The disciples replied: Even if the sea is small, and the yoke is fixed in one place with many holes, the turtle's neck might fit. However, the sea is vast, the yoke floats in all directions, and there is only one hole. The turtle is not still and always floats on the surface. Even if it had eyes, it might only appear once every hundred years, let alone a blind turtle, it is impossible to fit. The Buddha told the monks: There is a chance for the blind turtle's neck to fit into the hole of the yoke. Monks, I say that obtaining a human body is even more difficult than that. Therefore, do not waste this precious human life with leisure and opportunity. If you lose leisure, it will be impossible to make up for it later. Similar principles are also widely elaborated in the Garland of Flowers. If it is so difficult to obtain a human body, what about so many people gathered together? Generally speaking, obtaining a human body with leisure and opportunity is like placing a mustard seed on the tip of a needle. In particular, considering the number of other beings, it is very difficult to obtain even just a human body. For example, human bodies are like stars in the daytime, while animals are like stars at night. Animals are like stars in the daytime, while hungry ghosts are like stars at night. Hungry ghosts are like stars in the daytime, while hell beings are like stars at night. As it is said: Animals are like a little bit of lees in the outer ocean, hungry ghosts are like snowflakes in a blizzard, and hell beings are as numerous as the dust particles on the earth. This can also be understood through reason. Look at the number of beings seen in a forest, a river, a beehive, or a ray of sunlight. The entire vessel world is without humans, without cities, empty and desolate, like a wilderness. Obtaining a human body is fewer than the number of universal monarchs. Thinking of the crowds, in a large city, among the crowds watching the performances are Indians, Chinese, Monpas, Lopas, Nepalese, Zhangzhung people, Kashmiris, Mongolians, and so on. Among so many people, those who can enter the Dharma, study the Dharma, or have faith

Reflecting on the rarity of even distinguishing between actions and their consequences compared to the appearance of a Buddha in the world, generate joy within yourself and strive to avoid wasting the leisure and endowments. The Vinayavibhaṅga states: "Monks, look at the beings in the lower realms. It is extremely difficult to obtain a human body again. Look at these teachers with wrong views. It is extremely difficult to meet a true spiritual friend. Look at these who have fallen from discipline and liberation, these who are immoral. Abide in the qualities of practice, single-mindedly cultivate virtuous Dharma, and spend your life joyfully under a tree or in a monastery." Thus it is said. Fifth, generate joy from the perspective of benefits, and advise that when leisure and endowments are obtained, it is the time to strive in Dharma, thereby summarizing the meaning: Therefore, now is the time to seize the great ship of leisure. If you do not cross the ocean of suffering, then as a traveler on the path of Dharma, seeking opportunity, your learning and practice will be fruitless. Thus it is said. Like this, the nature of saṃsāra is a vast and deep ocean of suffering. Now, it is essential to seize the support for liberation from it—the great ship of leisure and endowments. Relying on it, the capable discriminating mind and the assembly of interdependent causes are said to be a body superior to that of the gods. Because the beings in the heavens are proud of their status, they do not realize the truth. The support for all vehicles, great and small, is only the Jambudvipa. Therefore, our teacher also went to Kapilavastu. Is this precious human body that I have obtained truly certain? Generate joy with the thought that it is like being happy in a dream. The Vinayavibhaṅga states: Maudgalyāyana, one should think of leisure with a single mind and remember it with joy. In particular, if you do not strive to have the captain-like lama helmsman steer the ship at this time, there will never be an opportunity to escape from the mouth of the crocodile of birth, old age, sickness, and death. The Bodhicaryāvatāra states: "Relying on the boat of a human body, one is freed from the great river of suffering. This boat is difficult to find again, so do not sleep in ignorance!" Thus it is said. The Treasury of Precious Qualities states: Leisure
