Fearing that they would become wanderers, they were extremely diligent in the path of virtue, and it is said that the attainment of fruits increased day by day. At that time, the venerable Ānanda, together with the community of monks, resided in places such as the Grove of Light, and because he established many beings in the four fruits, it was proclaimed in the world of gods and humans that the venerable Ānanda was a śrāvaka equal to the Teacher. After a while, the son of a merchant, who was born wearing hemp clothes and was known as the One with Hemp Clothes, was encouraged by the venerable one to become a renunciate, and he became the foremost of those who hold the teachings, and entrusted the teachings to him. According to the scattered statements of the Vinaya, the transmission occurred successively through seven generations up to Sudarśana, or eight according to the Kashmirian fathers. The commentary on the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra states something different from this. The seven generations of transmission are indeed the unparalleled great deeds for the Teacher's teachings. Furthermore, there is the story up to Nārada entrusting the teachings to the glorious Dīpaṃkara, and later, the paṇḍitas of Magadha gave the empowerment to Balaśrī and Bala. The various Indian stories made by the three Brahmin paṇḍitas Bhāṭa, Ghaṭa, and and the writings that arose from the many scholarly additions, although there are also stories that seem wonderful, since I was unable to write everything, I developed great faith in those things that became great pillars of the teachings. Here, for the time being, I have also attached great benefit to the teachings of the Śrāvakas. In particular, they clarified the tenets of the Great Vehicle, which is the field of activity for those of supreme intelligence, and for those who act as enemies of the Buddha's teachings, the followers of the six Tīrthikas, the six Brahmin sects, etc., who hold scriptures, and the six ascetics, i.e., the six heretics, who, with the sharp thorns of the three hundred and sixty views of the Saṃghāta, attempt to destroy the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha, with undeluded courage and perverse intelligence, and with the wisdom of the Pramāṇavādin, who devours obstacles like fire, and with the inexhaustible power of miraculous abilities that are free from obstacles like the wind, they boasted and disparaged.

After that, in order to cut off (wrong views), he performed the deeds of a second Buddha. To welcome the six ornaments of Jambudvipa, the two supreme ones, and the four great sages, who are as famous as the sun and the moon, I will narrate their realizations. In return for narrating even a little of the liberation stories of those who universally and individually illuminate the teachings, I will truthfully relate them. At one time, in the land of Campā Araza, there was a king of the solar race named Mita, who possessed the glory of prosperity. At another time, he united with the wife of a merchant, causing her to become pregnant. Later, during a ceremony to dispel sorrow in the king's palace, she gave birth to a child, who was named Ashoka (Mya ngan med). He was brave, resilient, and proficient in sixty-four arts and eight observations. Because he was angry and cruel, every morning, if he did not carry out punishments such as killing, imprisoning, and beating, his consciousness could not be calmed, and he could not even eat. Influenced by evil friends, he was zealous for the sacrifice of life. Later, due to past aspirations, the time came when he was seized by a virtuous friend. The Arhat Grags pa and his disciples, with compassion and miraculous powers, caused him to completely change his past habits, and his contribution to Buddhism was unparalleled. He became a patron during the Second Council. His contribution to the cause of Buddhism even surpassed his contribution to the kingdom, and he was not stingy or miserly. From his lineage, there arose King Moon Protector (Zla ba srung ba) of Oḍiviśa, who was contemporary with King Padma chen po but slightly later. The noble one, holding a sword, a robe, and three objects in his hand, descended into his house, preached some Mahayana Dharma, and left a scripture. It is said that this was the beginning of the Mahayana teachings after the passing away of the Teacher. It is said that this scripture appeared during the Third Council and gradually spread from the lands of gods, nagas, gandharvas, rakshasas, and so on. Many scriptures of Dharma categories, such as the 'Noble Heap of Jewels Sutra,' also appeared. Maitreya (Byams pa) and...
