Likewise, the tathāgatagarbha is also such. In the Uttaratantra, it says, "The body of the complete Buddha, because it radiates light, and because the suchness is without distinction, and because it has the lineage, all sentient beings constantly possess the essence of the Buddha." In the Root Wisdom, it says, "Whatever is the nature of the Tathāgata, is the nature of these beings." Although this is so, there are many debates about definitive and provisional meanings regarding this. Just as a fish is comfortable in water, it seems easy to understand in words, but the true meaning of the essence is not seen in its definitive meaning merely from superficial appearances. The Buddha-garbha Sutra says, "Neither ordinary individuals, nor śrāvakas, nor pratyekabuddhas, nor bodhisattvas see the Buddha-garbha as it is. For example, a blind man asks another about the color of butter, and he says it is like snow. When he touches the snow with his hand, he perceives the color of butter as cold. He says, 'It is like the wing of a swan.' Hearing the sound of the swan's wing, he perceives the color of snow as noisy. He asks, 'What is the color of the wing like?' 'It is like a conch.' Touching the conch, he feels it is smooth, and he perceives it as smooth. No matter how he says it, the blind man does not know the color as it is. Likewise, the nature of the Buddha is very difficult to see." It is so difficult because it is nothing other than the appropriation of the five aggregates. When the noble wisdom that transcends the eight aggregates of consciousness is manifestly seen without elimination or placement, then the way in which the profound definitive sutras abide in one intention is explained in the Moon Lamp Sutra: "The realms of the world are pure and empty. Whatever sutras I have spoken, the words and syllables are different, but the meaning is the same. It is not possible to express everything. If one meditates on one word, one will meditate on all of them. All that the Buddhas have spoken, extensively explaining the many dharmas, all dharmas are emptiness. Whoever is skilled in meaning, from learning these words, the Buddhadharma is not difficult to obtain." Likewise, depending on the three stages of guiding disciples, the Sutra Requested by Dhāraṇīśvararāja says, "Son of good family, for example, a skilled gem cutter who knows well how to refine gems...

Having taken a completely impure precious jewel from a great source, it is cleansed with strong salt water and then scrubbed with the ends of hairs. Not abandoning effort with just that, afterwards it is cleansed with strong food juice and then thoroughly scrubbed with wool fluff. Not abandoning effort with just that, afterwards it is cleansed with a great medicinal juice and then thoroughly scrubbed with thin cloth. When it is thoroughly cleansed and free from dirt, it is called a great kind of beryl. Son of lineage, likewise, the Tathagata also, knowing the completely impure realm of sentient beings, with words of ignorance, suffering, selflessness, and aversion, causes sentient beings who delight in samsara to generate weariness, and thus introduces them to the Vinaya of the noble Dharma. Not abandoning effort with just that, the Tathagata then causes them to realize the nature of the Tathagata with words of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Not abandoning effort with just that, the Tathagata then introduces sentient beings with various natures into the realm of the Tathagata with the words of the irreversible wheel of Dharma and the words of the three wheels being completely pure. Thus it is said. This example compares the realm of sentient beings with a completely impure precious jewel with defilements, and shows that scrubbing with salt water and the ends of hairs at first is the purifying action of the first turning of the wheel; then scrubbing with fish juice and wool is the purifying action of the intermediate turning of the wheel; and then scrubbing with the juice of arura and thin cloth is shown to be the purifying action of the final turning of the wheel. Thus, it is shown that the latter has a greater purifying power than the former, so the first turning of the wheel mainly causes sentient beings to turn their minds away from samsara, the second shows the nature of the Tathagatagarbha, and the third reveals to sentient beings with various thoughts that the essence itself is inherently possessed. Therefore, for the two kinds of beings of the Mahayana lineage, for the sake of the trainees to be trained in the intermediate, without relying on the final turning of the wheel, they can rely on their own power of discernment with the intermediate intention.
