Because it falls under the control of afflictions, it is called the mind's consciousness. The mind that establishes, because it is held by the consciousness that thinks, "This is my place," attachment arises to it, so it is called establishing. The mind that wanders everywhere is that which, having fallen under the control of objects, gathers all the subtle afflictions together. Therefore, it is called the mind that seeks everywhere. The mind that is extremely coarse is that which, with coarse afflictions, commits many actions such as killing and breaking vows. The mind that determines is that which, regarding those appearances, thinks, "This is mine," or "This is someone else's," that is the mind that determines. That is called ignorance of grasping and conceptualization. Artificial ignorance of the path is that which, when the six minds gather, obscures the path of wisdom, that is, the mind does not see wisdom and does not reveal it, there is no realization of wisdom, because the mind has movement, so it obscures the path to Buddhahood. That is called artificial ignorance of the path. Ignorance of not knowing and being deluded is that which, because it does not recognize that it exists in the light of its own appearance, revolves again and again, therefore it revolves in samsara. That is ignorance of not knowing and being deluded. Thus, six kinds of ignorance arise, therefore the appearance of wisdom is not recognized. Thus it is said. Then, because it is related to the consciousness of the extremely coarse aggregates of the six objects, the nature of the Sugata-garbha, the mind that is free from elaboration, this mind that is without inherent existence is also bound, clinging to "I" and "mine," therefore it is confused in dream-like samsara, and clinging to self, it becomes an appearance of various illusions. When it exists, some are light, some are darkness; some are nectar, some are water and fire. All completely contradictory concepts, habits follow, there is no definite teaching. Thus it is said. Thus, in the Sutra of the Play of the Lotus, the son of the gods, Play of the Lotus, said to Manjushri: Manjushri, are these external objects made by a maker, or how should they be viewed? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, these external objects are not made by a maker, but are appearances of the habits of mind or conceptualization. The son of the gods said: How can habits increase to the point that they appear as solid and dense things such as mountains, oceans, sun, and moon?

How can it be allowed? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, it is allowable. In the great city of Varanasi, a Brahmin named Fire Offering meditated on his body as a tiger. When the people of the city saw him as a tiger, they fled, causing the city to become empty. Moreover, by meditating on earth and water, they appear as earth and water. If a yogi monk meditates on impurity and the concept of bones, they appear as such, then why would the beginningless habits not appear? The son of the gods said: By the power of increasing habits, why do various forms appear? Manjushri said: All appearances are uncertain. The appearance of some is the darkness of others. For example, even with just the earth, some perceive the earth as earth. Some perceive the earth as fire. Some perceive the earth as enjoyment. Some perceive the earth as suffering. Fire, some perceive fire as fire. Some perceive fire as enjoyment. Some perceive fire as a dwelling. Some perceive fire as food. Water, some perceive water as water. Some perceive water as fire. Some perceive water as a corpse. Some perceive water as nectar. Some perceive water as a dwelling. Space, some perceive space as space. Some perceive space as a dwelling. Some perceive space as earth. Therefore, because it is uncertain, by the power of habits, it appears in any way. That's it. Thus, perceiving the four elements as their respective elements is the appearance of human beings. Furthermore, even the same earth is perceived as iron by hell beings, as enjoyment by farmers, and as suffering by those bound by karma. Similarly, for fire, gods perceive it as enjoyment, pretas with bodies of fire perceive it as a dwelling, and fire worms perceive it as food. The same is true for water. Hell beings perceive it as pus and blood, Hati Island perceives it as corpses, gods perceive it as nectar, and Paranirmita-vasavartin and others perceive it as rain of jewels and flowers, and nagas perceive it as a dwelling. For space, Devas perceive it as a dwelling, and gods perceive it as earth. As the Two Truths say: Although the object is one, the mind is different, so the true meaning is not seen. All of these are the ways in which beings' own karmic appearances and habits are transformed by conceptual thought alone. In the Guhyagarbha Tantra.
