If the land also appears with the aspect of partiality, which has faults, then cultivating joy towards the well-being and prosperity of a discordant place will become the antidote to all inferior minds. If joy becomes the object of mental agitation, then cultivate love and so on alternately from beginning to end. If cultivating joy towards the well-being and prosperity of others causes mental distraction, then cultivate love and joy, compassion and equanimity alternately. Moreover, cultivating compassion from equanimity, and then cultivating love is small; cultivating joy from love is medium; cultivating love from equanimity is great. As it says in the intermediate Mother Tantra: "Thus cultivate love! Cultivate joy! Abide in compassion! Take equanimity!" This means to practice diligently, like selling upwards and offering downwards, head over heels. Furthermore, the obstacle to love is compassion, the obstacle to compassion is joy, the obstacle to joy is equanimity, and the obstacle to equanimity is love. There is such a rule. Here, because the realm of sentient beings is naturally closely connected with the discordant aspects of the four Brahma-viharas, the method of counteracting it is mainly explained. Therefore, it is said in the Ornament for the Sutras: "Steadfastly abandon the discord of Brahma, possess non-discriminating wisdom, enter into three objects, and completely ripen sentient beings." And in its commentary: "Elsewhere, because of non-discrimination, from the three realms of happiness, suffering, and the intermediate, the object benefits sentient beings. How does the object enter? Merely not possessing happiness is the object of equanimity. Those tormented by suffering and those with attachment and aversion, because they abide in the cause and effect of suffering, are the object of suffering. Joy is happiness, it is the three realms of bliss that enter the mind." Thus, the common characteristic of focusing on sentient beings is explained. Now, in order to explain the fruit of cultivating the immeasurable, therefore, by cultivating in this way, the ripening manifestly increases. Desire realm gods and humans' bodies and definite goodness, the two, by experiencing such similar causes, one is separated from discordant factors and obtains happiness. By power, one enjoys desirable and delightful realms. The four causes become powerful, and one will obtain the qualities of the two benefits being abundant, that is, temporarily manifested by the ripening fruit.
