Due to opposing the Dharma, and being disturbed by afflictions, suffering, and conceptual thoughts, there is no leisure to engage in virtuous deeds, wandering in the eight states of unfreedom, which indicates that there is no opportunity to practice the Dharma. It is said: The foolish ones fall from here again and again, wandering in the three lower realms and the realm of non-conceptual gods, in border regions, with incomplete faculties, in places of wrong views, and where Buddhas do not appear. If we categorize them, there are eight states of unfreedom related to one's own continuum, eight states of unfreedom caused by sudden circumstances, and eight states of unfreedom due to impaired intellect. First, the direct explanation is from the Letter to a Friend: Holding wrong views and being born as an animal, being born as a preta and in hell, where there is no teaching of the Buddhas and in border regions, being born as a barbarian and being foolish and mute, and being born as a long-lived god, these are the eight faults of unfreedom. These are the eight situations related to one's own continuum. First is hell: There is not a moment of leisure, on the burning iron ground, the cruel punishment of weapons again and again, the hell beings who cannot die even when their lives are taken, are still caught in the net of the evil karma of anger. It is said that once sentient beings become hell beings, on the burning iron ground, they only suffer the punishment of weapons, and other intense suffering, without any rest or relaxation. Moreover, because they are caught in the net of anger, their lifespan is immeasurable, so there is no opportunity to have leisure as a basis for Dharma practice. Similarly, pretas are tormented by poverty, suffering from the burning of their entrails; animals eat each other, are surrounded by hunters, bound by yokes and cages, those skilled in weapons take their lives, they are pierced through the nose, harmed by iron hooks, and bound by ropes, etc., unable to bear the suffering of being tamed, this is the state of unfreedom. They cannot even find pus and blood to wipe away. What need is there to say that pretas are tormented by poverty? When they see rivers and trees, they immediately become thirsty and hungry, the suffering of their burning entrails cannot be eliminated, and due to the power of obscurations, their lifespan is uncertain. Animals eat each other, hunters cruelly take their lives, and for the sake of being used

What is the use of obtaining birth in a place afflicted by ignorance? This is the summarized meaning. Furthermore, those who greatly prolong the end of their lives, the formless ones who do not distinguish opportunities for weariness, the gods of the realm of non-perception whose basis for hearing and thinking is interrupted, those who hold wrong views at the time of death are not at leisure. This says that although the gods of the realm of non-perception and the formless realm live long lives, they are not at leisure because the basis for hearing and thinking is interrupted. Even if one greatly relies on a two-legged animal, its consciousness is not virtuous. Those barbarians who are bound and controlled wander in a forest of great confusion. This says that some people, although they appear in the form of humans, are like the people of the water and forest, their nature is like that of animals. They are more skilled in sinful means than animals, and they are conscious beings whose minds are controlled. The barbarians have become a basis for non-virtue in terms of Dharma, so their consciousness is not at leisure. Those who have broken the vows of their senses, the mutes, even if they meet noble guides, are like the clamor held by a rock, grieving in a vast wilderness where communication is impossible. This teaches that, like this, those who are mute in speech and cannot communicate language, or who are mute in mind and cannot communicate meaning, even if they meet noble guides and brothers, or like friends, are like mixing rocks and talk together, with no meaning at all, so their basis is not at leisure. Having obtained the great ship that crosses the ocean of birth and death, and after the banner of wisdom has been unfurled, they do not rejoice in the coming of the Buddha. Those who hold wrong views are tormented by demons. Those who have complete senses and are intelligent and aware do not rejoice in the coming of the Buddha, and the heretics who hold wrong views such as there is no other world are not at leisure in their minds. Those who have been abandoned by the Buddhas, in an age, having fallen into a deep, dark ravine, even if they strive to rise again, it is not the right path, and they are always in a miserable fall, going lower and lower. This teaches that when the Buddha comes into the world, there is also the light of the teachings, so it is called the Age of Light. Its emptiness is the Age of Darkness. At that time, even if one obtains a human body, it is the usual birth of the wrong path.
