Bhagavan, inseparable from body and wisdom, may I quickly attain the state of Vajrasattva. Thus, requests, gathering, dedication, and aspirations should all be made. This is the Vajrasattva King Za's practice and recitation routine from the four immediate necessities of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition, composed by the venerable Lama Jampel Yang himself. May there be auspiciousness! The method of reciting the mantra of the Various-Colored Mother to pacify smallpox. Refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, etc. The mother who gives birth to all Buddhas, abandoning birth and fear, possessing the conduct of Samantabhadra, I prostrate to the Various-Colored Mother. om phro viśva matā vajra kāṇḍā kanā nāśaya nāśaya mama śāntiṃ kuru kuru svāhā. (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་ཕྲོ་བི་ཤྭ་མ་ཏཱབཛྲ་ཀཱཎྜ་ཀ་ན་ནཱ་ཤ་ཡ་ནཱ་ཤ་ཡ་མ་མ་ཤཱནྟིཾ་ཀུ་རུ་ཀུ་རུ་སྭཱ་ཧཱ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: ॐ फ्रो विश्वा मता वज्र काण्डा कना नाशय नाशय मम शान्तिं कुरु कुरु स्वाहा, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: oṃ phro viśva matā vajra kāṇḍā kanā nāśaya nāśaya mama śāntiṃ kuru kuru svāhā, Literal Chinese meaning: Om, Phro, all-pervading, Mother, Vajra, Arrow, Kana, Destroy, Destroy, My, Peace, Do, Do, Svaha.) After reciting a thousand times, etc., I pray that the Bhagavati Mother bless me and all sentient beings, so that we are not harmed by diseases, epidemics, and especially Vajra thorns, etc. May all sentient beings abiding in the three realms attain unsurpassed enlightenment through this merit. May all sentient beings who are sick quickly be liberated from their illnesses. May all the diseases of beings always never arise again. May all medicines be endowed with power, and may the recitation of secret mantras be accomplished. May the dakinis, rakshasas, etc., be endowed with compassionate hearts. May the eighty thousand classes of obstacles be pacified, etc., recite. This was also done by Manjushri Ghosha. The method of redeeming life, called "Increasing Life and Glory" I prostrate to the Lama and the Bhagavan Protector Amitayus. The great accomplished master Ngakgi Wangchuk Drakpa said: Birds, fish, wild animals, thieves, and snakes, etc., those destined to be killed, by saving their lives, even the short-lived can become long-lived. As it is said, redeeming the lives of sentient beings who are destined to be killed is the most supreme of all life-extending practices. This is proclaimed in countless sutras, tantras, and treatises, and it can also be established by reason. Moreover, because its benefits are inconceivable, wise people should exert great effort in the matter of redeeming lives. In general, one should redeem the lives of animals that are mainly possessed by oneself with a good motivation, or those that one has killed oneself, and those that are harming others.

Without resorting to coercion or force, let them live peacefully within their respective habitats. Having done so, simply amplify the roots of virtue through dedication and aspiration. To accomplish the immediate purpose, a special ritual is not strictly necessary. However, if one wishes to elaborate somewhat in accordance with the circumstances of place and time, one may follow the practices found in some of the Nyingma instructions, such as establishing protective supports, or as described elsewhere. Alternatively, if one desires to commonly expand upon auspicious pronouncements and dedicatory aspirations, it is excellent to align with special temporal junctures such as the Month of Miracles, or the eighth or tenth days of any month. If the primary focus is on longevity, the practice should be conducted at sunrise when the life star of the individual being aided is ascendant and auspicious conjunctions are present. In any case, when the ransom objects and other items are arranged before you, recite the refuge and bodhicitta prayers three times, beginning with "I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha." Then, cultivate the four immeasurables, beginning with "May all sentient beings have happiness and the causes of happiness." If you wish to elaborate, reciting the names of the seven Buddhas and various special dharani mantras can greatly benefit beings, such as planting the seeds of liberation in the minds of animals. Even if you cannot do that much, recite: "Homage to the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, the Protector Amitabha!" Prefixing each Buddha's name with "Bhagavan" and so on, recite: "Homage to the Protector Akshobhya!" (Tibetan: རིན་ཆེན་གཙུག་ཏོར་ཅན་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ།), "Homage to the Seven Sugatas!" Then, recite the six-syllable mantra (Tibetan: ཡི་གེ་དྲུག་པ།), the Akshobhya Dharani (Tibetan: མི་འཁྲུགས་པའི་གཟུངས།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अचलस्य धारणी, Sanskrit Romanization: acalasya dhāraṇī, Literal Chinese Meaning: Unmoving Dharani), the Eleven-Faced Avalokiteshvara Dharani (Tibetan: བཅུ་གཅིག་ཞལ་གྱི་གཟུངས་སོགས།), and so on, in a loud voice. After that, holding flowers in your hands, visualize in the sky before you the Bhagavan Protector Amitayus, inseparable from your guru, surrounded by a sea of refuge objects, including Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, deities, sages, and those who have accomplished the truth of mantra. From their mouths, melodious sounds of auspiciousness emanate, and a great rain of flowers falls. May the life, merit, wealth, wisdom, and qualities of myself and all sentient beings, especially the patrons, increase and expand from above. May those who have taken birth in the animal realm also temporarily
