The Garden of Joy. Together with all the stains of ignorance, the lotus heart of the mind wishing to express blooms with splendor. Whatever is included, whether high, middle, or low, the formats of mutual letters are all filled with luster. With the beauty of a garland of blooming Utpala flowers as a metaphor, to bestow a feast of joy upon the first wise ones. Thus it is said. What is to be discussed at this time is that those who are able to illuminate the lotus of the ten sciences with the light of wisdom are most suited to compose examples of letters. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: Like gold being hammered, and like a lotus blooming. Like being threatened by hunger, enjoying well-cooked food. Hearing a good letter is like opening a precious box. Here, speaking of the Dharma, it creates supreme joy. Thus, although it is drawn from words similar to creating joy from hearing the good Dharma, nevertheless, we are very low in birth and learning, let alone the five sciences, we have not even fully understood the treatises of the former sages. As for someone like me, it is really not suitable to talk about it. As it is said: A person who does not know the scriptures, how can he distinguish between good and bad qualities? At the time of observing form, do blind people have it? As it is said, it is completely covered by inverted meanings. However, the teachings of the holy ones are difficult to disobey, so I vow to write truthfully, and explain it with five main points: How the format of letters arose in India and Tibet. The distinction between the high and low status of the recipients. The presentation and summary of these. And examples of how general topics are presented. Divided into five categories. First, how letters arose in India and Tibet. In the past, in India, when the teacher, the Bhagavan, was staying in the Nyagrodha Garden, the daughter of the king of Simhala, named Mutimant, heard the good name of the teacher and developed unwavering faith. Gods and non-gods and humans all pay homage, surely liberated from birth, old age, sickness and death, the great lord, widely renowned, please, O Sage, grant a share of the nectar with compassion. When she made such a request, the teacher accepted and recited it, and rays of light emanated from his body.

He also sent a painted image pressed with colors, and two lines of verse, etc., as a letter, and thus attained complete liberation. In addition, King Prasenajit of Kosala presented a letter, and the letter of the Mother of All Beings was written by the Buddha himself, and King Rupahrdaya of Central India and King Udrayana of Naraghosa presented letters with gifts, and eventually the King of Naraghosa attained the state of Arhat before the Blessed One, and the letter of friendship sent by Master Nagarjuna to his friend Sukhavati. Master Chandragomin sent a letter of instruction to a royal-born bhikshuni to remove faults from her training. Mati Citra sent it to King Kanishka, and Emperor Tahu of Mahachina presented it to the Sangha of Magadha, etc., which are endless. In the vast land of Tibet, Dharma King Songtsen Gampo sent letters to the kings of China and Nepal in order to invite the two Jowo statues as objects of faith and the two consorts. King Ralpacan had letters carved on stones for the reconciliation of China and Tibet, etc., which were very popular in the early days. Later, Dromtonpa of Mangyul sent a letter to invite Atisha, Khrophu Lotsawa presented it to Panchen Shakya Shri Bhadra, and Jamyang Kunga Gyaltsen and Dharma King Phakpa Rinpoche presented it to King Godan, and the Fifth Dalai Lama presented it to the Qing Emperor, etc. In short, whether high, medium, or low, all people raise the banner of goodness and are capable of eliminating evil deeds. The classification of letters is impossible to determine, and the number is countless. Secondly, regarding the order of offering letters, for all beings, they are unfamiliar great friends, lamas who are no different from all enlightened Buddhas, great omniscient panditas, masters of the Tripitaka who can drink the four streams of Sutra, Tantra, lineage, and excellence in one gulp, those who practice the profound path of the two stages, yogis who realize the profound, peaceful, and equal nature of all phenomena of samsara and nirvana, and great bhikshus who diligently uphold the Vinaya.
