Without interruption, they were all great accomplished masters who had perfected the qualities of realization. Second, the actual instructions are in three parts: preliminaries, main practice, and post-practice. First, there are three preliminaries: common preliminaries, uncommon preliminaries, and special preliminaries. First, there are four common preliminaries: the difficulty of finding leisure and opportunity, impermanence of death, the law of karma, and the faults of samsara. The method of training the mind with these four thoughts that turn the mind away from samsara is the same as others. Second, there are three uncommon preliminaries: the practice and recitation of Vajrasattva, the mandala offering, and guru yoga, which are known as the three preliminaries. First, there are three parts: taking refuge, generating bodhicitta, and the actual practice and recitation of Vajrasattva. First, all places become a pure and vast buddha-field. In front of oneself, in the middle of an ocean of nectar with eight branches, adorned with various jewels, is a wish-fulfilling tree with firm roots, a strong trunk, five branches, and abundant leaves, flowers, and fruits, pleasing and delightful. In the center, on a jeweled throne and various lotus and moon cushions, is the root guru, the great Vajradhara, surrounded by the lineage gurus. On the branch in front are the yidams, on the right are the Buddhas, behind is the Dharma, on the left is the Sangha, and in all the spaces in between, dakinis, Dharma protectors, and guardians are present like dense clouds. In front of them, oneself and all other sentient beings combine their three doors into one, and with sincere faith, take refuge, reciting the refuge prayer as appropriate. Second, for the benefit of all sentient beings, I shall attain the state of perfect Buddhahood, generating the aspiration, which is aspiration bodhicitta. For that purpose, I shall train on the path, generating the intention to practice, which is action bodhicitta, clearly establishing this and reciting it aloud. Finally, the refuge objects circumambulate to the right and dissolve into the central guru, who then dissolves into oneself, and one contemplates that one's being is blessed. Third, as it appears in the recitation text, one visualizes the Vajrasattva samayasattva clearly with the three stages of generation. One invites the jñanasattva to merge. One feels remorse for past misdeeds, and the intention to restrain from future misdeeds. As an antidote in the present, one visualizes the nectar descending and purifying, and recites the hundred-syllable mantra.

Recite as much as possible. Finally, strongly confess again and merge into oneself. Second, the mandala is practiced during the guru yoga below. Third, there are five: visualizing the guru yoga, performing the seven branches, offering the mandala, making supplications, and receiving empowerment. As it appears in the recitation, practice until the respective realizations have not arisen. In addition, along with a hundred thousand refuges, prostrations are the same. During Vajrasattva practice, accumulate a hundred thousand hundred-syllable mantras. During guru yoga, accumulate a hundred thousand mandalas as practice. Third, the special preliminaries are: on a comfortable seat, straighten the body's key points in the seven dharmas. The key point of speech is to clear the impure air and stop speaking, letting the breath flow naturally. The key point of mind is to cut off all the elaborations of the three poisons. Abandon the discriminating thoughts of the objects of the five senses. Consciousness turns inward, and like a young child resting freely, let the mind relax naturally. This is also called the three solitudes or the three immovables, or the three doors resting naturally. Second, the main practice has three: meditating on calm abiding by relying on a support, seeking insight by relying on a support, and introducing the union of the two. The first is: in front of oneself, erect a small twig or the like, representing any object of focus. Stare at it without blinking. Let consciousness also be absorbed in it. Relax without being distracted. When settling calmly, do not become too attached to that experience, but relax and rest a little. Then meditate again as before. Train in four sessions in this way, in short periods and many times. In each session, maintain that state without losing mindfulness. Do not look farther than the tip of the nose. All going and coming should be slow, like the behavior of a sick person. As an example, focus on a white bindu between the eyebrows, and a black bindu the size of a pill on the seat. Furthermore, one can make the supports of the body, speech, and mind of the pure Buddha, etc., as objects of focus and meditate as before. If one knows and is able, focus on vase breathing or vajra recitation. Even if one does this, if one still cannot grasp the point of settling, then when a thought arises, recognize it. Do not become weary of the practice, but grasp the key point and meditate, and the thoughts will become increasingly subtle.
