I pray to the Lama. You who hold these external appearances as true are even more foolish than the foolish. What exactly has entered your heart? Like this, on top of the previously decided view, how to appropriately adjust tightness and looseness, and integrate practice? First, eliminate illusions by tightening; in the middle, recognize your own nature by loosening; finally, have unwavering conviction in your own nature. Strive to experience the meaning of these words. By striving in this way, a slight clear appearance of conviction will arise, thinking that these external appearances are merely the illusion wheel of the mind, and there is no truth in the external. As the Ornament says, "From then on, it becomes suchness, the Bodhisattva abides in Samadhi, apart from mental expression, all meanings are not seen." This is called the Samadhi of obtaining the heat sign. For example, the moon in the thick clouds, the clouds become slightly thinner, the moonlight slightly dispels the darkness, and a faint gray-white light appears. Again, generate enthusiasm and meditate, and the previous clear appearance of the mind will expand greatly. A clearer experience of conviction will arise than before. As it says, "When the appearance of Dharma increases, it will only abide in the mind." This is called the Samadhi of the increasing appearance of the peak. For example, the moon in the clouds, slightly appearing from the gap in the clouds, so that one knows that the moon is here. Meditate with even greater effort than that, and in your own mind-stream, the obscuring object-grasping illusions of the clear light mind are almost completely purified, and a radiance of clear appearance and bliss, even greater than before, will arise in your own mind. As the Ornament says, "At that time, by the grasped, it will abandon that distraction, from then on, only the grasping, distracted mind remains alone." This is called the Samadhi of forbearance, realizing the absence of grasping. Although the illusion of the internally grasping mind has not disappeared, the illusion of the externally appearing object of grasping has disappeared, and no real attachment to external appearances arises at all, therefore it is called the Samadhi of obtaining the meaning sign. This is like the moon in the clouds, removing the outer layer of the two layers of clouds, inner and outer, and the clear appearance of the moon is even brighter than before.

Secondly, cutting off the illusion of clinging to the subject: Again, joy arises, and one strives greatly in meditation. As it says, "Since there is no grasping, there is no clinging," the illusion of the mind that clings inwardly also disappears. The luminosity of one's own mind becomes extremely clear, and a state arises as if one were seeing it directly. That is, "At that time, without interruption, one quickly attains samadhi. In this way, immediately after that, one abandons the distraction of clinging." As it says, this is the supreme, uninterrupted samadhi. At that time, although innate ignorance is not purified, the luminosity arises in which most of the manifested illusions of grasping and being grasped, which arise from that innate ignorance, are purified. One easily accomplishes the wisdom of the first bhumi of the path of seeing without obstruction. It is like the moon in the clouds, where the inner clouds that obscure it become thinner, and the moon becomes very clear. Again, through meditating with great joy, the basis of grasping and being grasped, the latent tendencies of innate ignorance, although not purified, their manifestations are purified. The luminosity of the nature of mind, free from grasping and being grasped, is seen as if nakedly and directly, and a clear appearance and confidence arise. That is, "Through intelligence, one knows that there is nothing other than mind. Thereafter, one realizes that mind itself does not exist. Possessing intelligence, one knows that both do not exist, and abides in the realm of dharma where there is no such thing." As it says, the manifested illusions of appearance, increase, and attainment disappear. As an antidote to that, the three paths arise in sequence, in which the clear appearances of appearance, increase, and attainment arise. After that, the great luminosity in which the coarse manifestations of innate ignorance also disappear is only at the time of the supreme mundane dharma. However, since the subtle latent tendencies of innate ignorance, together with their seeds, are not purified, one should not be mistaken into thinking that the actual experience of the first bhumi of the path of seeing has arisen. After that, the way in which the wisdom of the first bhumi of the path of seeing arises is as follows: After meditating in this way, a portion of innate ignorance, together with its seeds, is purified, and a portion of the luminosity of one's own mind is seen as being more manifest. This is "The first bhumi is called the path of seeing. Thereafter, through its power, unsurpassed wisdom transcends the world, without conceptualization, without defilement, two kinds of grasping.
