To discern whether dullness and agitation have arisen, one should continuously maintain mindfulness and awareness. Having recognized dullness and agitation, the remedy for abandoning them is mental engagement, which is to feel joy when counteracting dullness and to feel sorrow when counteracting agitation. When dullness and agitation subside, the remedy is to completely cease mental engagement, thereby pacifying them and settling the mind on the fundamental object of focus. Having understood this, in the case of having or not having a support for meditation, for beginners, one can visualize a blue lotus with a million petals, drawn to be about an arrow's length in front of oneself, or focus on any object that is easy to visualize. First, clearly visualize the field of refuge, and then take refuge, pray, and generate bodhicitta. Through various common mind-training methods, contemplate from multiple perspectives of renunciation and bodhicitta. The actual practice is: generate unwavering faith in the guru and the Dharma, guided by faith, generate a strong longing for the Dharma, and based on this, initiate joyful diligence with the desire to practice the Dharma. The result of this will inevitably be the pliancy of body and mind, so strive to achieve this. These four pliancies are the remedies for laziness, so they must be generated in the mindstream. Then, focus the mind on that object, integrating the activities of body, speech, and mind into one. First, concentrate. If you concentrate too much, problems such as tightness in the head may occur, so relax slightly in the middle, without forgetting the object of focus of the instruction, and balance mindfulness with awareness that observes dullness and agitation. If dullness and agitation occur, the remedy for dullness is to remember the qualities of the holy beings and feel joy, and the remedy for agitation is to contemplate the faults of samsara, these are all mental engagements. When dullness and agitation subside, finally, maintain the natural state, and on the fundamental object of focus itself, let the mind rest in a relaxed and loose manner, clearly and brightly. This is called equanimity of effort. If you understand such key points, you can simultaneously eliminate the five faults and perfect the eight antidotal applications, this is the instruction of the excellent guru. By meditating in this way, five stages of experiential development will arise in sequence.
