The first stage of abiding is like a waterfall cascading down a steep cliff, with one thought following another in an unbroken stream. Some small-minded practitioners may think that they cannot generate samadhi and become discouraged. This is called the experience of recognizing thoughts. In the past, because thoughts were not recognized, they were like thieves when practicing. Now that thoughts are recognized, it is a sign that samadhi will arise. Generating joy in this way and continuing to practice, the second stage of abiding is like a rushing stream in a narrow valley, where thoughts sometimes subside and sometimes suddenly arise, alternating. This is called the experience of thoughts resting. Continuing to practice again, the third stage of abiding is like a pool of water in a valley at a three-way intersection. If there is no disturbance from adverse conditions, one may feel that the mind is abiding in peace, but as soon as a slight condition arises, the mind cannot remain still. This is called the experience of thoughts being exhausted. Continuing to practice again, the fourth stage of abiding is like a turbulent ocean with waves. No matter what waves of thoughts arise, as long as one applies a little antidote of mindfulness, the thoughts will naturally disappear. This is called the experience of thoughts fabricating. Continuing to practice again, the fifth stage of abiding is like a calm ocean without waves. No matter what external conditions arise, there is no need to exert effort in applying the antidote of mindfulness, and spontaneous and relaxed samadhi naturally arises. This is called the experience of thoughts not manifestly fabricating. Like this, the latter two are, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Thereafter, the diligent one with discipline, has manifest fabrication in the mind, arises spontaneously, by that practice, does not fabricate." This refers to the nine methods of abiding the mind and the eleven types of attention, reaching the experience of attention with effort and attention without effort. Continuing to maintain this, as stated in "Thereafter, his body and mind, having obtained great pliancy, is called one with attention," the body and mind generate the bliss of pliancy, the body becomes as light as cotton, and the mind also generates great bliss, being able to abide in samadhi at will. This is only the access concentration of the first dhyana. Continuing to practice, one will generate samadhi that goes as one wishes.

Thus, most of the afflictions that should be abandoned disappear. One attains the supreme actual samadhi of the first dhyana, which is accompanied by joy and bliss. From that, the characteristics of clairvoyance and magical powers arise. One is fortunate enough to hear various instructions in the Buddha-fields of the ten directions. As Maitreya said: By this, one increases, and the increase goes on for a long time, and by this, one obtains the actual dwelling place. If one cultivates for the sake of clairvoyance, it will become workable. Having attained dhyana, one realizes clairvoyance. Through the gateway of realization, in order to make offerings and listen to immeasurable Buddhas, one goes to all the world realms. This is known from what was said. Therefore, no matter how much shamatha of scattered thoughts, shamatha of unclear mindstream, shamatha of cessation of object appearance, and shamatha of cessation of memory and perception arise, some are only active in the desire realm, and some do not exceed the level of access concentration. Therefore, no matter how much others praise the vague experiences and various appearances that arise from these, if one is free from self-grasping as supreme and arrogance of clairvoyance accomplishments, then one is adorned with the clear eye of Dharma. Second, the meditation on the joy of abiding in the mind: As it says, abiding, continuous abiding, scattered abiding, close abiding, taming, pacifying, extremely pacifying, one-pointed concentration, and equanimity. As in the previous key points, one focuses the mind on the object and holds it, and also continuously holds it, and if the mind wanders again, one gathers it inward and holds it, and so on, in nine ways. Second, the meditation on vipashyana has two aspects: meditating according to the instructions of the Nagarjuna lineage and meditating according to the instructions of the Maitreya lineage. The first is: In this tradition: First, avert non-merit, in the middle, avert self, and finally, avert all views. Whoever knows this is wise. As it says, there are three stages. The first is: contemplating the intention of the first turning of the wheel of Dharma, renunciation, and cultivating the mind in love, compassion, and conventional bodhicitta, which are the root of the Mahayana path. Nagarjuna said: For a while, avert the source of all faults, the view of annihilation. That is, averting the view that there is no cause and effect, etc.
