That is to say, the enjoyments, dwellings, companions, etc. of this life are like a joyous feast in a dream. As it says in the Samadhiraja Sutra: Just as one enjoys desires in a dream, but when one awakens, one sees nothing. Children are very attached to desires, and all things should be known in the same way. Similarly, beauty, youth, color, and the wealth of ornaments are all like rainbows, without any essence. As it is said: The impermanent body has no essence, like a rainbow appearing in the sky. Even if you grasp it as real, it will vanish. The life of beings is impermanent, like a lamp in a whirlwind or lightning flashing in the sky, it is impermanent in an instant. Je Tsongkhapa said: This leisure and endowment is more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel, difficult to obtain and easy to lose, like lightning in the sky. Even if one possesses the perfections of this life, becomes a universal monarch, and rules over the four continents, it is meaningless. The white clouds of autumn appear in various wonderful shapes, but know that they exist now and will disappear in an instant. Nagarjuna said: Even having become Indra, worthy of worship by the world, one will fall back to earth due to the power of karma. Even having become a universal monarch, one will become a servant in samsara. Therefore, recognizing that everything is constantly changing and not staying for even an instant, turn your mind away from samsara and may a pure mind of renunciation arise in your mind. As it is said: Leisure and endowment are difficult to obtain, and life has no leisure. By familiarizing oneself with it in one's mind, one can abandon attachment to this life. These teachings explain the path of the small person, such as death and impermanence and the suffering of the lower realms, and the path of the intermediate person, such as generating the mind of seeking liberation. The Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment says: By whatever means, one seeks only one's own happiness, in the happiness of samsara, this person should be known as the lowest. Turning one's back on the happiness of conditioned existence, one's nature turns away from sinful actions, seeking only one's own peace, this person should be known as the intermediate. As it is said. Second, there are two parts: the way to rely on a spiritual friend, the root of the path, and how to rely on the path after relying on a spiritual friend.

Thus is the way to learn. First, the source of all happiness and accomplishment is, the excellent Mahayana spiritual friend who possesses all the qualities. May I rely on him properly with unwavering faith, who can take away the fear of samsara and nirvana even by just remembering him. This means that the source of temporary happiness and ultimate definite goodness, or all accomplishments, is that one must rely on the lama, the spiritual friend of the supreme vehicle, who possesses all the qualities as described in the sutras and tantras. As it is said in the Compendium of Precious Qualities: "Good disciples who are respectful to the lama, should rely on the wise lama. Why? Because the qualities of the wise arise from that." How should one rely on him? One must seek someone who can take away the fear of samsara and nirvana even by just remembering him, that is, pacify it. As it is said in the Treatise All-Encompassing Knowledge: "Seek through reason, scripture, and examples." Furthermore, the Mahayana virtuous friend who possesses ten qualities, and the Vajra Master of mantra who possesses those ten qualities, should be relied upon well with perfect intention and action. May I rely on him properly with unwavering faith, which cannot be turned away by the works of demons. The second has two parts: generally showing the root of the path, and explaining the individual paths in detail. First: Thus, the meaning obtained from the virtuous friend, the lama and the Three Jewels who are the refuge of reliance, pray with devotion, inseparable in your mind. With compassion, knowing all beings as your parents, taking on the suffering of all, giving away all my happiness and virtue to others, saying, "I shall place myself in unsurpassed bliss," having generated the sacred mind of enlightenment, may I spend day and night practicing the six perfections. This means that after relying on a virtuous friend, the first thing to obtain from him is not just seeking peace and happiness, but to understand the key points of the refuge of a great person without error. One should take refuge from the bottom of one's heart in the lama and the Three Jewels, who are worthy of being a permanent refuge, not just a temporary one. Then, the root of the Mahayana path is to know all sentient beings as one's parents. As Jetsun Shyapa Dorje said: "All sentient beings of the six realms are my parents."
