Because courage has been completely grasped. Thus it is said. Therefore, the vow of the vidyādhara arises here as the nature of the seed of non-retrogression. It matures by being gathered into the nature of the fruit's lineage through the ritual of the vidyā empowerment. It is perfected in the guru's empowerment. Generally, the ritual is: Upāyika. Where, upāya is means, and ika is having. In terms of definitive meaning, upa is near, and nāyaka is leading or guiding. Because it leads closely, it is a means. Because it possesses this means, it is one with means. Because it includes all mandalas by means of profound methods of guiding wisdom, it is a ritual. When classifying it, at the top it says: What is the mandala ritual like? Ritual is dharma and yoga. Thus there are two. The upper commentary says that reality itself has ten aspects. What are the ten? They are as follows: mandala, mantra, mudra, guarding oneself and the place, etc., the ritual of inviting the deities, recitation, meditation, the fire offering of inner and outer self-nature, drawing near, and offering and requesting departure. Thus it is said. The first of these is: the two, with form and without form. The second is: time, the number of recitations, painted images, and the certainty of postures such as the lotus posture, the manner of reciting mantras, the ritual of vajra recitation, and the manner of accomplishing the fruit of recitation, and so on. The third is: when practicing the three samādhis, the deities must be sealed with the four mudras, so they are the four mudras. The fourth is: the protection wheel. Etc., including bathing, changing clothes, and blessing the tongue and hands. Or it is guarding the yoga. The fifth is: gathering the jñānasattvas, praising them, and then performing the summoning and dismissing. The sixth is: words and vajra recitation, and so on. The seventh is: previously, during the time of approach, the three samādhis are perfected, and meditating on the mandala of the heart, the great yoga, the subsequent yoga, and yoga, and so on. The eighth is: performing the fire offering at the time of offering to the mandala, and so on. The ninth is: the ritual of dissolving the mudras. The tenth is: offering with the eight, such as vajra songs and coquetry, and making requests.

And inviting (the wisdom being) to descend. These (wisdom beings) are also inseparable from the wisdom dharmadhatu that is free from elaboration and the wisdom that realizes it, because that suchness is not deceiving in its object, it is the suchness of ultimate truth, it is the nature of wisdom. By the power of that wisdom, the bodies of deities such as the Vajradhatu, as well as mantras, mudras, etc., appear, because it is not deceiving in the realm of benefiting sentient beings, it is the suchness of conventional truth, it is the nature of means. The reins that truly hold those two are the vows spoken of in the Yoga Tantra. Among these ten, the "gathering of mudras" is extremely important, so I will explain it briefly. The essence is: the ultimate truth, the dharmadhatu, the characteristic of beginninglessness and endlessness, the very nature of Vairochana. Its characteristic is the mudra, that is, the deity of ultimate truth, as well as the bodhisattvas related to it, and the worldly deities that appear, are all gathered into its retinue. So it is. In terms of the meaning of the words: For "Mudra (Tibetan: མུ་ཏྲ་)", the etymological explanation is: "Modanada (Sanskrit Devanagari: मोदनादा, Sanskrit Romanization: modanādā), because it is pleasing, it is a mudra", because it makes the minds of the Buddhas happy. "Mudana (Sanskrit Devanagari: मुदान, Sanskrit Romanization: mudāna), expanding", that is, to bestow benefits in order to protect sentient beings, and to expand in order to quickly accomplish the desired things, as it says in the Later Tantra: "Just as a king with his own seal, seals with the king's decree, the great lord's own mudra also, thus blesses all beings." Also, Samayamula (Sanskrit Devanagari: समयमूल, Sanskrit Romanization: samayamūla, root of the vow), because it becomes the root of the vow; Mukuta (Sanskrit Devanagari: मुकुट, Sanskrit Romanization: mukuṭa, crown), Daharu (Sanskrit Devanagari: डहरु, Sanskrit Romanization: ḍaharu) is translated as Hetu (Sanskrit Devanagari: हेतु, Sanskrit Romanization: hetu, cause), Parama (Sanskrit Devanagari: परम, Sanskrit Romanization: parama, supreme), that is, the binding of the crown is empowerment, because it is the cause of the supreme; Mutti (Sanskrit Devanagari: मुत्ति, Sanskrit Romanization: mutti, body), Dida (Sanskrit Devanagari: डिढ, Sanskrit Romanization: ḍiḍha) makes it stable, therefore it is a mudra. The Discrimination of the Conqueror of the Three Realms says: "This is the root of the vow, the binding of the crown is the supreme cause, whose body is all stable, therefore it is proclaimed as the great mudra." So it is. Mudra, characteristic, sign, and near characteristic are all synonyms. In particular, because it expands on the cause of sentient beings, it is a mudra. That itself becomes supreme because of others, therefore it is great, it is the secret of the mind of all the Tathagatas.
