Explaining the foundation and advising to protect it. With a mind that transcends the limits of the world, showing the differences of individuals from the perspective of results, whoever desires to go should protect the precepts. Showing the precepts themselves in detail, and incidentally advising from the perspective of the fruit of wisdom. One should truly abide in the complete, stainless precepts, and with peaceful wisdom, it will fully ripen in the mind. Here, there is old age and death, therefore, it is shown in the manner of concluding by relying on the precepts, there are nine in total. Liberation from disease and fear, whoever desires to attain it should protect the precepts. This commentary on the words of the precepts, made by the scholar Sanggra, is very clearly present. Colophon: The work by the scholar Vasubandhu is complete. Translated, edited, and finalized by the Indian Zaranana and the great translator Rinchen Zangpo (Ratnabhadra). From the twenty-eighth chapter of the great poem "Acts of the Buddha" by the teacher Ashvaghosa: Like firewood filling the countryside, the beings of the world burned by the fire of desire, like great clouds at the end of summer pouring down rain, this rain of Dharma will completely satisfy them. And like a sick person who does not want to approach medicine, merely seeing the doctor cannot eliminate the disease, similarly, if you do not cultivate my wisdom, merely seeing me will not eliminate suffering. And like, in the world, having realized birth, therefore completely abandoning the view of annihilation, in the world knowing destruction, quickly abandoning the steadfast view of permanence. And like, speaking with great compassion for the Sangha, like a teacher, like a lamp, like true meaning. After my passing, you should rely on the Pratimoksha, that is your teacher, you should follow it. Even when I am alive, I say the same. Wanting the actions of body and speech to be completely pure, similarly, abandoning all worldly terms, regarding land, life, seeds, materials, etc., one should turn away from attachment like from fire. And like, birth comes with death and old age, which are frightening, and the heavens also exist with falling, they are not permanent. And like, the supreme

Having attained the unchanging and immutable essence, the compassionate and wise Sage, is worthy of offerings, is supreme, is the arrival of the holy. Thus and so forth it is said, this is a poem with rich vocabulary. From the Jataka Tales of the Bodhisattva, "The Dharma Drum," composed by the hero: If there is a bird with full wings, possessing the nature of hundreds of thousands of excellent qualities, a bird appears and pulls out a long piece of bone stuck in the throat of a wild animal enemy, that wild animal then despises it in order to kill and eat it, but even if it has the power, it does not become angry, with the field of patience, bearing the fruit of immortal nature, the sound of the Dharma Drum is proclaimed. Thus and so forth it appears. In the "Precious Garland of Advice to the King," it says: To obtain higher realms and happiness, one must desire definite goodness and liberation. If one summarizes the practice, in short, it is faith and wisdom. It also says: Because one has faith, one relies on the Dharma; because one has wisdom, one knows the truth. Of these two, wisdom is the most important; faith is the preliminary to this. Desire, hatred, fear, and ignorance, whatever does not transgress the Dharma, that is called a person of faith, and is a supreme vessel of definite goodness. It also says: Abstaining from killing, abstaining from stealing, abstaining from adultery, abstaining from false speech, divisive speech, harsh speech, and meaningless speech. Without attachment and harmful thoughts, therefore completely abandoning (wrong) views. These are the ten white paths of action, and the opposite are black deeds. Not drinking alcohol, living well, not harming, respectfully giving, offering to those worthy of offerings, and loving-kindness, in short, the Dharma is like that. It also says: As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is self-grasping. If there is self-grasping, there is action; from that, there is birth. It also says: Attachment, hatred, and ignorance, knowing their faults, completely abandon them. Without attachment and without ignorance, knowing their virtues, rely on them with respect. It also says: Even with the perfections of the gods, one should not be arrogant. Even if one is poorer than a hungry ghost, one should not be discouraged by decline. It also says: The qualities of a Bodhisattva, briefly stated, are generosity
