Benefit. Where a monk, due to the cause of solitude, finds peace and happiness without fault. Where one becomes attached to properly relying on resources, the mind is afflicted by various deprivations. Like a water tree, a bamboo, its leaves falling, after bearing fruit, it shows its own destruction. Likewise, after a practitioner is liberated from household life, attachment arises when seeing oneself being suppressed. Like deer covered in earth's dust, content with just grass and leaves. The mind desires to dwell in solitude, not even in the great abundance of the four continents. The ascetic who relies on the flowing water under the tree is the treasury of wisdom and compassion's teachings. Those who completely abandon all concerns and are intimately connected only with their own minds, that source of happiness, kings do not possess. The tips of green trees sway in the wind, with fine and gentle rain falling. Unwavering, well-discriminating, dwelling in the mountain valleys, a monk generates virtue at night. Having indulged in the desire for enjoyment, the attachment to serving oneself is reckless. One should rejoice in the forest free from birth, having become a monk, one should not become meaningless. The appearance of a monk should not harm oneself, nor should one practice anything that has been taken up. To be immersed in attachment to inferior things is to deceive the world of livelihood. Water and stone marrow are without roots, ascending to high ground, in unbearable wastelands. It is bearable to die with realization, one should not fall due to the complete decay of discipline. Like ships sinking in the tumultuous waves of the ocean, laden with precious cargo. Likewise, the heavy burden of attachment to wealth, familiar with household life, destroys the vastness of those supreme teachings. The peaceful deer that dwells in the forest is disturbed by the gait of a young maiden, symbolizing. Like an antidote, those who truly desire peace, the disciplined should diligently practice extreme solitude. Those with wisdom, if afflicted by the poison of the world, and tormented by small attachments. One should completely abandon these, the undisputed call of asceticism, alas, has greatly declined. Thus it is said, one who desires liberation, abandoning his own home, yet desires the homes of unfamiliar others. Having crossed over the tumultuous waves of the ocean, one then follows the footprints of a cow.

Like sinking. (This is one sentence.) Abandoning the arrogant attachment born from the touch of the minds of inferior beings, And the distinctions of those who pursue desired goals. The noble ones, disregarding the ensuing attachment and the firm bonds and fears, Joyfully abide in peace in the forest, without any remaining desires. (This is one sentence.) Merely speaking, perhaps it can be done, but remaining in words is futile. Those who make words their essence are like clouds devoid of water in autumn. Because, in the teachings of the Tathagata, practice is the very essence. Therefore, to enter into practice, one must have wisdom and be skilled in mind-made words. (This is one sentence.) Etc., extensively spoken. There are three pages. Thus, this short compilation, excerpted solely from faith from the collection of discourses composed by the great masters of the noble land (India), was diligently and swiftly written by the young Fearless Wisdom and Compassion in the auspicious Lotus Light Continent, by the light of a small lamp. May it be auspicious! Abridged Collection of the Words of Indian Scholars.
