Grasping, wandering people and, all the abbots, when the Blessed One passed away, say: This child is a noble one, prostrate at the feet of the Blessed One! After being instructed in this way, he did as he was told. Everyone said: May you live long! By the power of speaking the truth, his life was extended, so he was given this name. Because his wisdom was very great, he reached the other shore of the sea of Vedas and became the teacher of five hundred Brahmin children. In the Jeta Grove, after questioning a monk, he developed faith and secretly renounced the world. He recited during the day and practiced at night, becoming an Arhat. His retinue of five hundred Brahmin children also renounced the world. Whoever sees, touches, or remembers the scripture held in the hand of this venerable one will gain eloquence and great wisdom, destroy the darkness of ignorance, purify karmic obscurations, always obtain the support of leisure and endowment, and encounter the Mahayana Dharma. Whoever sees, touches, or remembers the mudra of teaching the Dharma will gain the light of wisdom, hear the sound of the Three Jewels, possess correct views, subdue all wrong views, and in all lifetimes will obtain the qualities of not being separated from seeing the Buddha, etc. The twelfth, the Stable One of the Small Path: He was the younger brother of the Stable One of the Great Path, born a year later. As before, in order to have a long life, he grasped the crossroads of the small path, hence the name. From his own elder brother he renounced the world. However, because his wisdom was very dull, he was made to recite a single syllable for three months, but he could not learn it, so he became discouraged. The Blessed One comforted him, and in order to purify his karmic obscurations, he was instructed to wipe the shoes of the monks, and taught to recite the two verses: "Remove the dust! Remove the dirt!" After learning them, he contemplated their meaning at dawn and became an Arhat. Later, he manifested the Dharma through miraculous powers, causing twenty million beings to see the truth. The Teacher also praised him as the best of those who have transformed their minds. Whoever sees, touches, or remembers the mudra of equanimity made by this venerable one, all three poisons, suffering, mental disturbance, and evil thoughts will be pacified, and he will possess many qualities such as subdued senses and the pacification of adverse conditions. The thirteenth, Elder Bharadvaja Pindola: He was the son of the former Bharadvaja lineage of Rajagriha, possessing a crownless kingdom. Although endowed with great merit, he became weary due to the increase of past defilements, and thus he renounced in the presence of the Teacher. He attained Arhatship. Because he practiced only alms-gathering, his name became known as such. The Blessed One also praised him as the foremost among those who practice alms-gathering. When he observed the twenty-eighth summer retreat in Shravasti, he taught the Dharma in the monastery of the householder Ghosaka in Kausambi, causing many Arhats to increase. He subdued King Sharpa, who was intoxicated by the power of arrogance, through miraculous powers. By the power of his aspiration, for all sentient beings who are in unfavorable states and have fallen into wrong views, he shows the scriptures of the Tripitaka. All who see, touch, or remember it, all sufferings of the deaf, blind, mute, and those with impaired memory will be pacified. The senses will be complete, and they will possess the wealth of the noble ones. Deep, swift, clear, and sharp wisdom will increase. He blessed the alms bowl with qualities like a good vase, so that whoever sees, touches, or remembers it, all needs and desires will be fulfilled, and they will possess the seven noble riches and the bliss of the gods. The fourteenth, Elder Naga: He was born in the northern city of Padma. He is known as the Victorious One's Naga Seal or Naga Troop. For the sake of kingship, he accumulated many sins through harsh means. When the ministers prepared to kill him, he became frightened and sought refuge in the Blessed One. He confessed his sins and renounced, becoming an Arhat. He went to the heavenly realms and taught the Dharma, leading countless beings to the path of liberation. The sons of the Four Great Kings accepted his teachings and offered many treasure vases of jewels, which he blessed into one. Whoever remembers it, all inexhaustible desires will be fulfilled. It has many qualities such as washing away all karmic obscurations with the nectar of the gods. The sound of the bell, whoever hears it, all diseases will be pacified. The fifteenth, Elder Sbeta or Cattle Herder: He was the head of a householder family in Varanasi.

It is said that this one had five sons, and he was the fourth. Having heard that his elder brother Grakpa Tönpa had renounced, the other four also renounced and became arhats, and these five brothers were known as the Close Five. If someone sees, touches, or remembers the manuscript in this one's hand, he will become skilled in the five sciences, completely pacify all the afflictions in his own mindstream, obtain the power of a Dharma king, increase true wisdom, become the eldest son of the Buddha, and so on, and be endowed with many qualities. The sixteenth is the Elder Immovable: He was born in the royal palace as the son of the Brahmin Bilinda Drungwang of the Batra lineage. His name was Immovable. Having faith in the Teacher, he renounced. Through practice, he attained the state of an arhat. The Blessed One praised him as the best of those who abide in compassion. When he wanted to cross the Ganges River, as soon as he said, "Good woman, stay!" it is said that the Ganges stopped flowing. Due to the influence of past karma, after renouncing, he was afflicted by illness for as long as he lived, so he mostly stayed in the royal palace, and the Teacher also sent someone to care for him. He also gave teachings on the sick. Stories of binding thieves and robbers through miraculous powers also appear. He went to the land of the yakshas north of Mount Meru and led the yakshas to the path of liberation. In order to pacify their cruelty, the Teacher gave him a great stupa, which he carried in his hand. If someone touches, sees, or remembers it, he will be endowed with the three trainings, happiness will arise, all sins will not arise, and they will be purified. Thus, these sixteen noble elders, our Teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, instructed you: Until Maitreya Buddha attains complete perfect enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Vajrasana, do not pass into the realm of nirvana without remainder, but in the form of a shravaka, protect the teachings for the benefit of sentient beings. Therefore, they are still present in the field of merit for gods and humans in a truly visible form, and if you pray, the blessings will be very swift. The Kadampa masters also made it their uncommon practice, and the reason for this is also...
