If someone prevents, then for that reason, you could also say that, because there is nothing to prevent, I do not prevent at all. Therefore, all things are emptiness, because there is no preventer and nothing to be prevented. Your statement of 'preventing' is an unfounded accusation. Furthermore, you said: 'If self-nature does not exist, what can your words negate? If it does not exist, without words, negation is completely established.' What you have said, let it be explained now: 'Even without words, the negation of non-existence can be established.' Here, 'without words,' does it refer to understanding arising and ceasing? Even without your words, or rather, even without words, the negation of non-existence can be established, then what use is your statement that 'all things are without self-nature'? Let it be explained now, the statement 'all things are without self-nature' does not make things themselves without self-nature, but rather it is to make people understand that things without self-nature are without self-nature. For example, someone says 'Devadatta is not at home, but he is at home,' and then someone says 'he is not,' this statement does not create Devadatta, but merely shows that Devadatta is not at home. Similarly, the statement 'things are without self-nature' does not make things themselves without self-nature, but rather because beings are deluded about all things being without self-nature, like an illusionary person, being separated from the essence of true existence. Therefore, ignorant ordinary people cling to things as having self-nature. Furthermore, you said: 'Just as children mistake a mirage for water, you also mistakenly cling, thinking that existing things need to be negated.' And so on, you have said four verses, let it be explained now: 'Regarding the simile of the mirage, what did the Mahayana practitioner say? There, how does this simile apply? Please listen carefully and determine.' Regarding the simile of the mirage that you mentioned, what the Mahayana practitioner said, and how this simile applies, please listen carefully and determine.

If the clinging to water in a mirage is considered to exist by its own nature, then it would not be dependently arisen. What is it that clinging arises in dependence upon? Is that not emptiness itself? If the clinging to water in a mirage is something that exists by its own nature, and is not something that arises dependently, then why does it depend on distorted views and inappropriate mental activity? Because it does not arise without depending on distorted views and inappropriate mental activity, therefore it is dependently arisen. Because it is dependently arisen, therefore it is empty of inherent existence, just as was previously explained. Furthermore, if clinging existed by its own nature, who could reverse that clinging? The same principle applies to the remaining (feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness). Therefore, that objection is invalid. If the clinging to water in a mirage existed by its own nature, then no one could reverse it, just as the heat of fire, the wetness of water, and the unobstructedness of space cannot be reversed, because inherent nature cannot be reversed. But in fact, that clinging can be reversed. Therefore, that clinging does not exist by its own nature. Just as this example shows, the same principle should be understood for the remaining five aggregates (form, feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness). Therefore, the assertion that all phenomena are not empty because there are six sense faculties, six sense objects, and six consciousnesses is not valid. Furthermore, your reasoning is not established, because inherent existence does not exist, therefore your reasoning (itself) does not exist. Where does that 'existence' that your reasoning is trying to prove reside? Without reasoning, your assertion cannot be established. What is to be explained here is that the previous reasoning is meaningless, because it is the same as what needs to be proven (emptiness). The previous example of the mirage was used to refute, and that is precisely what needs to be proven. These present arguments and what was previously stated should be understood as refutations of the claim that 'reasoning does not exist.' The previous argument used to obstruct the six aggregates is also applicable here. Furthermore, regarding whether inherent existence exists or not, if you say 'first refute, then establish,' that is not reasonable, and 'simultaneously' is also not reasonable. What needs to be explained here is that the arguments concerning the three times (past, present, and future) have already been answered, because they are the same as what needs to be proven. Your assertion about the three-time reasoning is acceptable to those who proclaim emptiness. The assertion that the three-time reasoning is obstructed has actually been refuted, because it is the same as what needs to be proven. Just like your... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
