still does not exceed its own nature. In the hot hells, there are sufferings such as the body being burned by fire and cut by weapons; in the cold hells, there are sufferings such as being extremely cold and the flesh and bones being broken into pieces; in the neighboring hells, there are sufferings such as living in a pit of burning ashes. If these sufferings were to befall oneself now, even a small part would be unbearable. The pretas (hungry ghosts) suffer from hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fatigue, and fear. Beings who universally exist in the animal realm suffer from being eaten by each other, and those who are scattered are subjected to being used. Humans also suffer from being high or low in status, seeking desires and not obtaining them, encountering the unpleasant, and being separated from loved ones, all of which are seen manifestly now. Even the gods of the desire realm, when signs of death and near-death omens occur, their mental suffering is greater than the physical suffering of hell beings. Even the gods of the form and formless realms, although there is no manifest suffering now, when they fall to lower realms, they must experience all the sufferings of the lower realms, therefore this three realms samsara does not exceed the nature of suffering. Therefore, one should think of completely abandoning samsara and attaining the state of liberation. According to the order of the three levels of individuals, this completes the path of the lower and middle individuals. According to Serlingpa (Suvarnadvipi), this completes the four dharmas of the preliminary practice of reliance. Abandoning Self-Interest and Eliminating Errors in the Path Third, abandoning self-interest and eliminating errors in the path includes the cultivation of loving-kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta. The first is: Cultivating Loving-Kindness Like this, it is not enough for oneself alone to be liberated from the suffering of samsara. All beings in the three realms have been my parents many times and are the only benefactors. Especially this root mother, first conceived me in the womb, and later when I was born, like a small worm, she gave me life. Then, remembering all the kindness she showed by raising me with food, clothing, etc., thinking that this mother is a benefactor, I must bring her happiness. Then, remembering the kindness of other relatives, as well as enemies who bring harm, and suffering beings such as those in the three lower realms, who have also been my mothers many times since beginningless time, generating the loving-kindness of wanting them to attain happiness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Should be cultivated as giving. Cultivating Compassion. Second, cultivating compassion: Remembering the kindness of the root mother, thinking that this kind mother needs to be free from suffering, but now she is in the nature of suffering, it is so pitiful. How wonderful it would be if she could be free from suffering! I should free her from suffering. Cultivate in this way. Similarly, for all sentient beings, remember their kindness as before, and cultivate compassion, wishing them to be free from suffering. If loving-kindness and compassion do not arise in the mind, the true Bodhicitta will not arise. Therefore, it is very important to strive for these two as the foundation of all Mahayana teachings. Cultivating Bodhicitta. Third, cultivating Bodhicitta, divided into three types: Aspiration Bodhicitta, Equalizing Self and Others Bodhicitta, and Exchanging Self and Others Bodhicitta. Aspiration Bodhicitta. First, Aspiration Bodhicitta: Thus, parents and sentient beings in the three realms of samsara need to have happiness and need to be free from suffering, but now I do not have this ability. Moreover, the greatness of the world, such as Brahma and Indra, and the transcendent Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have this ability. Who has it? Only the fully enlightened Buddha has it. Therefore, for the benefit of all sentient beings, I must attain the state of perfect enlightenment, and then liberate the kind parents from the ocean of samsara. Cultivate in this way. If there is no Aspiration Bodhicitta, which is the cause of attaining Buddhahood, then the root of all virtues will be missing. If there is this aspiration, then all the roots of virtue that are cultivated will be transformed into the cause of perfect enlightenment. Therefore, the Mahayana scriptures praise this greatly. Equalizing Self and Others Bodhicitta. Second, cultivating Equalizing Self and Others: Just as I want to have happiness, all sentient beings also want to have happiness. Therefore, just as I accomplish my own happiness, I must also accomplish the happiness of all sentient beings. Just as I do not want suffering, all sentient beings also do not want suffering. Therefore, just as I eliminate my own suffering, I must also eliminate the suffering of all sentient beings. Cultivate in this way. Exchanging Self and Others Bodhicitta. Third, cultivating Exchanging Self and Others: Visualize the root mother in front, thinking that this mother, although kind, is in the nature of suffering, it is so pitiful. May the suffering of this mother and all her negativity ripen upon me, and may I experience it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
