Collected Teachings of Kunga Pal (Kunpang Chökyi Nyima) GR57: Instructions on Severing the Four Attachments: The Key to Profound Meaning 8-6-1a Instructions on Severing the Four Attachments: The Key to Profound Meaning Practice Primarily Based on the Scriptures Instructions on Severing the Four Attachments: The Key to Profound Meaning 8-6-1b Whose wisdom, like a celestial path, pervades all that is knowable; whose compassion, like lunar rays, adorns the heads of beings; whose activity, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, is a treasure that fulfills all needs and desires. May the incomparable protector, Shakya Simha, bestow goodness upon beings! Mañjuśrī, the embodiment of the wisdom of all Buddhas of the three times; Avalokiteśvara, who vowed to protect all beings of the three realms; and the Sakya masters, who took human form to guide beings in this degenerate age. To those whose names are difficult to utter, I prostrate with reverence! Through the power of accumulated merit, I have obtained a precious human body to practice the sacred Dharma. With abundant wealth, I make offerings to the Dharma and those who uphold it. To the one with a virtuous and noble mind who has asked again, I will now explain the unique and essential instructions of the Great Vehicle. First, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, without being asked, skillfully benefits all the worlds. In accordance with the faculties, intentions, and predispositions of those to be tamed, he taught countless collections of Dharma, which can be summarized into the Paramita Vehicle and the Vajrayana. First, there are two types of practice: practice primarily based on the scriptures and practice based on essential instructions. Regarding the former, Maitreya in the Ornament of Clear Realization (Abhisamayalankara) explained the meaning of the Prajnaparamita Sutras, the stages of the path of the eight clear realizations; in the Ornament of the Sutras (Sutralankara), he explained the intention of various Mahayana sutras, the stages of the path such as devotion to lineage and Dharma; Nagarjuna in the Precious Garland (Ratnavali) explained the stages of the path of accomplishing higher realms and definite goodness, with faith and wisdom as the means of accomplishment; Aryadeva, with the aim of attaining Buddhahood by abandoning the four perversions, perfected the conduct of a Bodhisattva, cutting off all obstacles including afflictive obscurations, making his mind a suitable vessel for the nectar of suchness, and then taught the essential nectar of suchness; Shantideva, beginning with the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the basis of a yogi's body, by practicing the six perfections of a Bodhisattva's conduct and connecting them with pure aspirations, the stages of the path to Buddhahood are taught. Jo bo rje said: 'Abandoning attachment to this life and only pursuing the next is the small person; abandoning the happiness and fruits of samsara and only pursuing liberation is the intermediate person; striving for Buddhahood for the benefit of sentient beings is the great person.' He taught the stages of the three types of individuals. Glorious Chandrakirti (Dpal ldan zla ba grags pa) also said: 'In the state of ordinary beings, by practicing compassion, the mind of enlightenment, and non-dual wisdom, after attaining the noble grounds, one traverses the ten grounds with the ten perfections, thereby accomplishing the three bodies.' He taught the stages of the path to accomplishing the three bodies. These are excellent traditions that have been unerringly explained by masters who have achieved mastery over the Great Vehicle's teachings, but although they are very excellent, they can only be understood by those who are proficient in the scriptures, and cannot be comprehended here in a brief manner. The Practice of Essential Instructions Secondly, to practice these meanings with the essential points of the instructions, although there appear to be many in general, the main ones are those given by Lama Serlingpa to Jo bo rje, and those given by Manjushri (mgon po 'jam pa'i dbyangs) to the Sakya Lama (bla ma sa skya pa). Among these, the most important is what Lama Serlingpa gave to Jo bo rje: First, cultivate the four thoughts that turn the mind from samsara—the difficulty of finding leisure and endowments, impermanence and death, the law of karma, and the faults of samsara—as the basis for generating the mind of enlightenment. Through cultivating loving-kindness and long-lasting compassion, mainly meditate on the Bodhicitta of exchanging self and others in the main practice, and also meditate on the ultimate Bodhicitta when appropriate. On the branch of the path, transform adverse conditions into the path of enlightenment, and teach the condensed practice of a lifetime. Also, the measure of proficiency, the vows of mind training, and the precepts of mind training are practiced. Through these practices, this is an excellent path that is quick to take effect and firmly established. In Tibet, this Dharma was given by Jo bo rje to Geshe Dromtonpa (dge ba'i bshes gnyen 'brom ston pa) and no one else, and Geshe also only gave it to the three brothers Rinpoche (sku mched rin po che rnam pa gsum), and from then on it became very prosperous, becoming a famous path like the sun and moon in the snowy highlands. These practices can be found in the writings of Gyalse Chokdzongpa and his son (rgyal sras chos rdzong pa yab sras), and Sempachenpo Zhonnu Gyalchok (sems dpa' chen po gzhon nu rgyal mchog), and others.
