In the twelve links of dependent origination, the aggregates (skandhas) in the state before the six sense bases (six sense bases, the six organs of sense) have arisen are the five aggregates (five aggregates, the five components of existence: form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness). The six sense bases refer to the state of the five aggregates from the arising of the six sense bases until the three—root, object, and consciousness (root, sense organ; object, sensory object; consciousness, awareness)—have not yet come together. Contact refers to the state of the five aggregates after these three have come together, until the distinction between pleasure and pain is not known. Feeling refers to the state of the five aggregates after the distinction between pleasure and pain is known, until sexual activity is not known. Craving refers to the state of the five aggregates after sexual activity is known, until attachment to the enjoyment of sexual activity has not yet arisen. Grasping refers to the state of the five aggregates after attachment to the enjoyment of sexual activity has arisen, until one runs about completely for the sake of obtaining that enjoyment. Existence refers to that very running about, the state of the five aggregates that accumulates the karma for the arising of a future rebirth. Birth refers to the state of the five aggregates at the first instant of conception in the womb in the next life, caused by that karma. Aging and death refer to the state of the five aggregates from the second instant of conception, beginning with name and form (name and form, mental and physical phenomena), up to feeling. If these are placed in the center, then birth corresponds to consciousness, and aging and death correspond to name and form up to feeling; the others are inferred similarly. If everything is the five aggregates, then why are ignorance (ignorance, unawareness of reality) and so forth listed as limbs (limbs, components)? This is because in each stage, whichever element is most important is named after that element and listed as a limb. For example, in the initial stage of afflictions, ignorance is most important; in the stage of karma, action (action, volitional or karmic action) and thought (thought, intention) are most important. Therefore, although each limb contains all five aggregates, they are distinguished in this way because they are named after ignorance and so forth. As the scripture says, 'Because of the principal, the limbs are proclaimed.' If the twelve limbs are all placed within the five aggregates and these are placed within the three times (three times, past, present, and future), then what is the necessity of doing so? This is to dispel the confusion about whether a 'self' existed in the past, so that one understands that there is only a continuum of aggregates and that no 'self' existed at all; to dispel the confusion about whether a 'self' will arise in the future, so that one understands that there is only a continuum of aggregates and that no 'self' will arise at all; and to dispel the confusion about what the nature of the 'self' is in the present, so that one understands that there is only a continuum of aggregates and that no 'self' exists at all. As the scripture says, 'It is only aggregates without a self.' And, 'To completely reverse the confusion about the past, future, and present.' All twelve are summarized into three afflictions (three afflictions, greed, hatred, and delusion). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, they can be summarized as: ignorance, attachment, and grasping are the pervasively defiled afflictions; volitional formations and becoming are the pervasively defiled actions; and the remaining seven are the fundamentally defiled. The reason is: they can also be summarized into cause and effect: the five encompassed by afflictions and actions are the dependent origination of the cause; the remaining seven are the dependent origination of the effect. As it is said: 'Three afflictions, two actions, seven foundations, thus are the effects.' Fifth, if the twelve links are encompassed by one part, then in the stage of the later life's result, the five from consciousness to feeling would not exist, because the limbs of the later life's result are all subsumed under birth and old age and death. If in the stage of the previous life's cause, attachment, grasping, and becoming would not exist, because the limbs of the previous life's cause are all subsumed under ignorance and volitional formations. If you think so, there is no fault, because by inferring that the limbs of this life's result are divided into five parts, it can be recognized that the limbs of the later life's result also have these five limbs; by inferring that the limbs of this life's cause are divided into three parts, it can also be recognized that the limbs of the previous life's cause also have these three parts. As it is said: 'The cause and effect of the two are abbreviated, inferred from the middle.' Then, why are the causes and effects of the former and latter not distinguished in detail? If so, the sutra's statement that 'the twelve links, with one part, cause the latter to arise from the former' would not be established, so in order to establish this, the causes and effects of the former and latter are abbreviated, while the middle is distinguished in detail. Sixth, if ignorance has no cause, then cyclic existence would have a beginning; if it has a cause, then the number of twelve links would not be fixed. If old age and death have no effect, then cyclic existence would have an end; if it has an effect, then the number of twelve links would not be fixed. If you think so, the answer is: 'From affliction arises affliction, from action arises the foundation, from that arises the foundation and affliction, this is the law of the limb of existence.' The details will be explained below. Furthermore, the sutra's statement that the twelve links are encompassed by one part, and that the two parts of the twelve links encompassed by cyclic existence must be complete, seems to be the view of all the collections of the Great and Small Vehicles. Here, even if only one part of the twelve links mentioned in the sutra is established, three lifetimes are definitely needed; even one part of the twelve links encompassed by cyclic existence requires two lifetimes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
