If, through the door of attachment arising from the object of attachment, one realizes the object of one's own attachment, that is not valid cognition (pramana), because it is not the cause of the meaning of the object of one's own attachment, i.e., it is not the result. Second, refuting the fault of being too pervasive: If it is said that the definition of valid cognition, 'non-deceptive,' has the fault of being too pervasive, because conventional consciousness is non-deceptive. Then, taking the example of the general characteristic of a pot, etc., led by the direct perception of grasping a pot, conventional consciousness, in terms of the subject, does not accept being non-deceptive towards the pot, because it grasps by adding to the pot already grasped by the direct perception of grasping the pot that it leads. Third, refuting the fault of being impossible: The Vaibhashikas say, the definition of valid cognition, 'consciousness,' has the fault of being impossible, because it does not pervade the basis of valid cognition, the corporeal sense faculty. Then, the consciousness that cognizes the object to be measured is valid cognition, but the corporeal sense faculty, etc., are not valid cognition, because the result of valid cognition has two types: a definite result and an indefinite result. Among these, the former is knowing the objects to be accepted and rejected separately and then engaging in acceptance and rejection, at which point consciousness is the main thing, and the sense faculty, etc., are not. If there exists consciousness with the aspect of its own object to be measured, then there exists the second result, which is understanding the meaning; if it does not exist, even if the sense faculty, etc., exist, they are useless. The latter reason is established, because the consciousness with the aspect of the object, merely by existing differently, establishes the different term for the consciousness's understanding of the meaning. Third, explaining the determination on the basis of the subject: Then, how are the two definitions, 'non-deceptive' and 'consciousness,' determined on the basis of the subject of valid cognition? In terms of the valid cognition of conventional terms, from self-awareness, one knows the essence of oneself, i.e., understands the meaning, because self-experiencing self-awareness direct perception is able to lead to the determination that oneself is consciousness. This shows that all valid cognitions of conventional terms are self-determined in terms of knowing the part of the definition. Self-awareness direct perception implicitly shows that the part of the definition, 'non-deceptive,' is self-determined, because autonomously leading the determination of the object of engagement and autonomously leading the determination of its non-deceptive part are the same key point. Then, since it is non-different from consciousness, can it also autonomously lead the determination of non-deception? In terms of the valid cognition of conventional terms, from the term of determining consciousness, i.e., the subsequent determining consciousness, one can determine the counter-entity of valid cognition, 'non-deceptive,' because the subsequent determining consciousness can... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because it is certain that there is no deception regarding the object of cognition, the term 'pramana' (प्रमाण, pramāṇa, valid cognition) is used. So, does this definitive cognition arise by its own power or by the power of others? As it is said: 'Two objects and two self-cognitions, inferences are all determined by self-power, initial appearances and unfocused minds, those prone to error are determined by others.' It should be understood as such. Most Tibetans believe that the former only indicates self-determination, and the latter only indicates other-determination, which seems to be without distinguishing the basis on which to establish self-determination and other-determination. Furthermore, it seems that they do not understand that the 'pramana' of self-determination and other-determination is merely the 'pramana' that is universally used. What is said here is no different from the explanation of Jamyang Sakya. Furthermore, here it is also important to distinguish that the aspect of cognition is a distinction in meaning, not a distinction in terminology; and that 'pramana' itself is a distinction in meaning, not a distinction in terminology, which has already been explained in the general meaning. So, if cognition relies on itself and non-deception relies on terminology, then wouldn't the treatises on 'pramana' become meaningless? The treatises on 'pramana' are not meaningless, because if one does not understand the definition of 'pramana' that is universally used, one cannot prove that the Bhagavan (भगवन्, bhagavan, Blessed One) is 'pramana', therefore, it has the purpose of eliminating ignorance about 'pramana' and the definition of 'pramana', and enabling people to understand it correctly. Second, refuting contradictions with other views of one's own school. So, what if it contradicts the 'manifestation of an unknown meaning' in some parts of Dharmakirti's treatises? It does not contradict, because the 'manifestation of an unknown meaning' has the same meaning as the former, therefore it is the definition of 'pramana'. Lha considers the definition to be other, and Gyan considers the definition and the defined to be other, which has been refuted in the Rigs gter. Some people think that the former indicates Dharmakirti's own system, and the latter indicates Dignāga's school, which has been refuted in the general meaning. Does this cover the cognition of negation? To this, Indians and some Tibetans answer: 'Is it the negated thing itself? Is it the thing of the negated dharma itself? Or, is it the apprehended aspect of cognition itself that appears as the object of cognition, therefore there is no fault.' However, the venerable Sakya says: 'It is reasonable to distinguish whether self-character exists or not.' This will be explained below. So, for self-characters such as blue, after directly cognizing its own nature with direct perception, does the consciousness that cognizes the general characteristic of blue therefore become 'pramana'? Because it is the 'manifestation of an unknown meaning', because it cognizes the general characteristic that was not previously cognized by direct perception? Even if it is a newly cognized general characteristic of blue, it is not the manifestation of an unknown meaning. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
