Possessing qualifications. For the beings to be tamed, teaching the Dharma according to their wishes, possessing vast wisdom and compassion, without fatigue. Although possessing excellent qualities, without arrogance and pride. If possessing these characteristics of qualities, even if the lineage and appearance are inferior, they are the guide of the true path, therefore one should rely on them. Therefore, the Vajra Guru is able to quickly attain the state of liberation and omniscience. As it is said in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": "The Guru who possesses the characteristics, through empowerment, liberates from suffering." The characteristics of a disciple. The characteristics of a disciple to be abandoned. Fourth, regarding the characteristics of a disciple, there are two aspects: to be abandoned and to be accepted. The ones to be abandoned are: As it is said in "Self-Arisen Wisdom": "A disciple who is not a vessel, has little wisdom, is flattering and watches faces. Is eloquent but slow in action, is very cunning and deceitful. Disobeys the Guru's words, disputes kindness. Does not see qualities, finds faults. Has bad lineage and nature, despises kindness, praises oneself. The vows and commitments are impure. Without examining the disciple, the Guru becomes an enemy. The empowerment of Great Perfection, and the meaning and instructions, should not be shown to a person who does not practice." This means having little wisdom and being ungrateful, being good at observing and flattering, praising in person and slandering behind the back, being eloquent but slow in action, being hypocritical and cunning, not respecting the Guru's words, not listening to instructions, not seeing qualities but finding faults, repaying kindness with harm, liking to sow discord, praising oneself and arguing about merits, being angry and stingy, not keeping vows and commitments, practicing and behaving improperly, having bad lineage and behavior, being disgusted when seen, and being annoyed when associating with them, are not vessels for the empowerment and instructions of Great Perfection, therefore they should not be given. Even if given, not only will it not be beneficial, but it will become arrogant and conceited, becoming the cause of wrong views and non-virtue. The teachings will also become impure, the blessings will be small, and ultimately they will fall into the lower realms. As it is said in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": "Furthermore, if this essence of the quintessence is poured into a bad vessel, the vessel will break, the essence will leak, and one will fall into hell." The characteristics of a disciple to be accepted. The ones to be accepted are: As it is said in "Self-Arisen Wisdom": "Possessing faith and diligence, having great wisdom and no attachment, having great compassion and practicing secret mantras.

Oh! In the non-conceptual mind, there is no distraction. Possessing vows and diligently practicing. Thus it is said. In "Longsal," it says: Having faith, great compassion, and generosity. Subduing the mind, fearing sin, and having sharp senses. Able to keep secrets, practicing asceticism greatly. Having renunciation, enduring suffering, and having great perseverance. This is the vessel of secret mantras. This nectar drop, the essence of the heart, should be taught to the excellent son. Thus it is said. That is, having pure faith that delights in the lama and instructions, having the faith of longing and desiring to pursue the meaning, having unwavering confidence without doubt, and having ultimate, irreversible faith that cannot be changed by circumstances. Because one possesses the complete cause for blessings to enter, one has unwavering courage. One has a firm commitment to diligence without procrastination or laziness. Understanding the meaning of words, one cuts off misinterpretations of the profound meaning of reality. Because one has abandoned attachment and clinging, one does not focus on the activities of samsara. One serves with body, speech, and mind with single-pointed devotion. Having cut off the bonds of doubt, one enters the practice of profound secret mantras. Because one has no ordinary wrong thoughts, one does not experience fear or dread in mantra practice. Because one has little distraction, one shows slowness in the three doors. Because one's vows are pure, one does not incur faults or transgressions. Because one has no weariness or laziness, it is easy to generate experience and realization. One has pure perception and devotion without partiality. With compassion, one cherishes all beings and has a great mind of benefiting others. One is generous in accumulating merit. One is without agitation and is peaceful and gentle. One has great fear of sinful actions. One knows how to distinguish between dharma and non-dharma. One is inseparable from practice and one's conduct is never impaired. One has little interest in worldly affairs. One is patient with hardships and has great perseverance in dharma. These are those with good karma and fortune, who possess the qualities of an excellent vessel for secret mantras, and are therefore worthy of receiving empowerments and instructions. To such an excellent son of the lineage, giving instructions brings qualities, and not giving them brings faults. As it says in "Longsal": Suitable as a vessel for the essence of secret mantras, a great being who guides sentient beings. Thus it is said. In the examination of the vessel and time of "Nyingtig," it says: If this is not taught to the one who should be given it, the profound dharma treasure will disappear. When the time is ripe, if one does not teach it oneself, the benefit of beings will be interrupted and one will incur a downfall.
