Thus, when teaching the instructions, the history is first narrated in order to generate faith and certainty in the fortunate disciples. Regarding this, it is said in the Heart Essence of Entrusting and Liberation: "The teacher Samantabhadra and Samantabhadri, other than you, there is no vessel for beings. Through the blessing of self-nature, by entrusting, knowing one liberates all. Transcending the limits of bondage and liberation, through the blessing of Vajrasattva, spontaneous joy arises in the heart. To Singha himself the lineage was entrusted, the lineage of entrusting and liberation with complete fruition, entrusted to Orgyen Padmasambhava." As such, from the state of primordial space, the dharmata, primordially pure and free from elaboration, glorious Samantabhadra arises as the spontaneously accomplished body of wisdom. To Vajrasattva and others, the five self-existing families, in countless peaceful and wrathful mandalas, he taught the Great Perfection, which transcends sound, words, and activity, the great equality of the three times. Vajrasattva and others, in the boundless realm of Akanishta, emanated countless self-appearing retinues from their own forms, and taught the meaning of the inseparability of body and wisdom, like unobstructed, self-arising sound and images. These are the mind transmission of the Buddhas, transmitted through mere intention, and are called the Intent Transmission. Vajrasattva himself, in the charnel ground blazing with fire, explained to Garab Dorje the nature of reality, which transcends activity, with excellent composition of words, and personally compiled the scriptures. In the charnel ground of fierce transformation, he directly appeared to Shri Singha and taught him. He transmitted the reality beyond conceptualization, through symbols and signs, to Padmasambhava and others in the world of Saha, which is called the Symbolic Transmission. From Zhotö Tigro Drakkar and other places, to Kharchenza and other retinues of lords and subjects, he established the fivefold wisdom heart essence as self-luminous and directly perceived. From these, the intention of the mind as the signifier, and the blessing of the wisdom of meaning as the signified, are sealed with the aspiration to transfer in succession. The symbolic language transmission as the signifier was written down, and the teachings descended from the respective scriptures, treasures, and pure visions. The instructions were compiled into a collection and transmitted from ear to ear, which is called the Oral Transmission. Thus, the profound Dharma treasures that arise from the three or six distinctions of transmission, in other tantras, the Vajra...

The meanings concealed by Je's words are clearly shown through the seventeen tantras and their commentaries. What is hidden is brought to light, what is twisted is straightened, and what is disturbed is restored to its original state, thereby realizing the supreme path of Great Perfection, the secret treasury of the intention of all Buddhas of the three kayas. Relying on symbolic signs, one quickly realizes the actual state of the signified meaning. This is a pith instruction that encapsulates the essence of the path. By practicing this, one will definitely attain the state of perfect and complete enlightenment in this very lifetime and body. As stated in the Tantra of Arraying the Lamps: "From the intention-transmission symbols and the oral transmission, the valid cognition of the meaning of secret mantra arises. Relying on examples, one recognizes the nature of meaning. Relying on signs, conviction arises. Because the essence of meaning is thoroughly understood, the three wisdoms established in the ground, abiding as seeds, through the wisdom arising from conditions, ripen as grains, dispelling the darkness of ignorance, and the obscurations of knowledge are naturally purified. Without searching, the result is naturally seen." Therefore, it is necessary to relate the history, as well as the benefits of explaining and the faults of not explaining. As stated in the "Clear Expanse": "In order to generate definite understanding in the fortunate ones, the history of the lineage should be told." And: "The lineage is extraordinary, generating the blessings and definite understanding of profound instructions." Also, as stated in the Tantra of the Union of Sun and Moon: "If the meaning of the history is not explained, for this tantra of great secrecy, the fault of disbelief will occur." Empowerment. Secondly, regarding empowerment. As stated in the "Clear Expanse": "The outer vase empowerment with elaboration, the inner secret empowerment without elaboration, the wisdom-gnosis empowerment with extreme non-elaboration, and the precious word empowerment with utter non-elaboration, are taught to the worthy disciple in sequence." And: "In order to bring the manifest into focus, the five special empowerments of complete non-elaboration are bestowed." Therefore, like a key opening a door, empowerment is bestowed in brief, elaborate, or intermediate forms. Regarding the reasons for needing empowerment, the benefits of receiving empowerment, and the faults of not receiving empowerment, as stated in "The Mirror of the Heart of Vajrasattva": "Without relying on secret mantra empowerment, how can accomplishment occur? Like a deaf-mute without hands, how can one cross over to the other shore?" And as stated in the "Clear Expanse": "Having received empowerment, the continuum matures.
