First, regarding the Buddha, stupas, Dharma, and Sangha as real, and considering all those abiding in the ten directions as objects of faith, one should first prostrate and offer flowers and incense, and by implication, offer lamps, scented water, food, and other objects of offering, whatever one can afford, without being miserly, offering all the actual arrangements. Furthermore, one should also perform the seven types of imagined offerings spoken of in the "Excellent Conduct Prayer" of the Noble Samantabhadra's Conduct. Regarding refuge, unlike the common refuge, the difference in time is until the ultimate essence of enlightenment, and the difference in thought is the unbearable compassion for other sentient beings tormented by suffering, and the thought of saving those sentient beings from suffering with an unwavering intention. Regarding the object or basis of refuge, the Three Jewels, the Buddha and Dharma are no different from the common refuge, but regarding the Sangha, here it is specifically mentioned as the "irreversible Bodhisattva Sangha." One should generate great faith in them by recalling their respective qualities. The bodily conduct is: placing the kneecaps on the ground, and joining the palms. The main practice is the generation of the mind of enlightenment, first is the ritual of refuge, following the teacher and reciting the refuge formula three times, which is called the special refuge. Regarding this, Potowa said, "The vows of a layperson and a novice monk are obtained from the teacher, the vows of a fully ordained monk are obtained from the Sangha, and the two, aspiring Bodhicitta and engaging Bodhicitta, are obtained from accumulating merit." This is mostly what is said. Sometimes it is also said that they are obtained from both intention and action. Sharawa said, "It is not that a teacher is not needed, as stated before, it is also necessary to be someone who has become a Mahayana lineage. Meeting a genuine teacher, and all those who have become a Mahayana lineage, also arise from accumulating merit, and that alone is the true meaning." In short, from many lifetimes ago, one has relied on a virtuous friend of the Great Vehicle.

Furthermore, the third Buddha of this fortunate eon accumulated immeasurable merit through mind training, thereby fully awakening the Mahayana lineage. Here, too, protected by the virtuous friend and protector, by cultivating loving-kindness and compassion, the seed of compassion is fully awakened, and through the means of accumulating vast merit, these two are perfected. Since it arises from relying on a virtuous friend who is in accordance with the Dharma and performing the rituals properly, when Potowa was residing in Radreng, someone said that now is not the time to generate Bodhicitta. The venerable one said, now that we have obtained a human body and encountered the Mahayana Dharma, which is like the rising sun, and also met a Mahayana virtuous friend, if now is not the time to generate Bodhicitta, then is it that we have to wait until we fall into the three lower realms to generate Bodhicitta? Generate Bodhicitta at that time? It's like joking like that. Therefore, it is also not right to say that now is completely not the time to generate Bodhicitta. In general, as an ordinary person, there must be a foundation or basis. Even as an ordinary person, one must rely on worldly treatises. One must know how to associate with many people, and also know how to associate with few people. Similarly, one must also know how to associate with good and bad people. One must know how to be an official when one should be an official, and one must know how to respect elders and those who are worthy of respect. When one needs to associate with peers, one must also know how to associate with them. One must know these things. Whether it is practicing the worldly path, or as the basis of individual liberation vows, or practicing the Mahayana path, it needs to be done by such a person. Now, there is not even the qualification to be a human being, and one does not even know how to associate with friends. Among friends, there is not even a mind as broad as a slug, so what prayers are you asking for? It is said that one wants to imitate recitation. It seems that that kind of person will be even more serious. Such a person will not generate Bodhicitta. The worldly path is said to be more difficult than generating the Samadhi of the peak of existence, and more difficult than generating the mind of a Hearer. It is said that attaining the Arhatship of a Hearer is more difficult than generating Bodhicitta. Now, in worldly affairs, even a small state of approaching the first Dhyana is difficult to generate, let alone seeking upwards. It's like having only heard the Mahayana Dharma for a month or two, vaguely, not understanding anything.
