When they offered the khatas, the Bhagavan said: There is no place where one can go and not be overtaken by death. It does not exist in the sky, nor in the depths of the ocean. Even entering the mountains is of no help. Thus he spoke. The end of all beings is certainly death, as it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: Day and night without stopping, this life is constantly decreasing, and if there is no additional increase, how can we not die? As it is said, the key is that life has no addition but only subtraction. Therefore, in the letter to the disciple, it is also said: From the very first night of entering the womb, from then on, these worlds, without deviating even a step, are approaching the Lord of Death. As it is said, one's own life is impermanent in an instant and continuously. Therefore, like the flowing water on a steep mountain, or the sheep driven into the slaughterhouse, and the person being led to the execution ground, all paths are blocked by the Lord of Death. Enjoy yourselves without any worries! Thus it is said. Like this, not only will one certainly die, but also when one will die is completely uncertain. Sharawa said, the teacher Vasubandhu said: If the sound is unpleasant, the lifespan can reach a thousand years; if there are two, then it is halved. Here it is uncertain, and finally, even the first ten years cannot be estimated. As it is said, the unpleasant sound of the north can live for a thousand years. After that, even if they have self-grasping, but because there is no clinging, they will be reborn as gods. Generally, the lifespan of men and women in the three continents is not fixed. In particular, the lifespan of those in Jambudvipa is not fixed, so it is also impossible to determine when one will die. The Lord of Death dwells in the midst of conditions, like a lamp in the wind. As it is said, like a lamp in the wind or a bee about to run out of honey, there are many causes of death, so it is also impossible to determine when one will die. Some die in the mother's womb, some die at birth, some die while crawling, some are children, some are young, some are in their prime, some die in middle age. Only a few are able to live to old age and weakness. We are young now, thinking that we will not die so soon, but there are many examples of dying in the mother's womb. We should not be like that now, not doing what should be done, but doing what should not be done. What needs to be done now, there is only this one chance!

What to do? When someone thinks, "This is called Dewu Re," the Lord of Death, Yama, holds a club, looks askance, his eyes bloodshot, furious, thinking this person is talking nonsense. Just as it is said in the letter to the disciple, when death will occur is completely uncertain. When death comes, the Bodhisattvacharyavatara says, "Though I lie on my bed, surrounded by relatives and friends, the suffering of losing my life is experienced by me alone. When the messengers of the Lord of Death seize me, what use are relatives, what benefit are friends? At that time, only good deeds can protect me." Or, "Even the flesh and blood that were born together will decay and separate, let alone other friends?" As it is said, even one's own consciousness and this body that came together from the mother's womb will separate, let alone enjoyment and relatives? Therefore, nothing other than the Holy Dharma can be relied upon. Therefore, death is bound to happen. Also, Putowa said, "What will I become tomorrow or the day after?" As it is said, when death will occur is completely uncertain, but now I think, 'I will not die like that,' which is always upside down. For one's own essence, tomorrow or the day after, this life or the next, which will come first is uncertain. For example, a month, half a month, ten days, and the next life, which will come first is uncertain. Even if strict precautions are taken, if symptoms such as pain appear inside the body, there is no certainty that one will not die. In short, from birth onwards, one is bound to die, because for those who are born, old age, sickness, and death are inevitable. Therefore, even if one prays, 'Do not grow old, do not get sick, do not die,' what is the use? Or, Sharawa said to a Khampa merchant, you merchants come and go like stopping on the road every day, and the birth and death of samsara are the same as that. At the time of death, this corpse will also, the body will eventually turn to ashes, eventually dry up, eventually rot, eventually become unclean, without essence, completely destroyed, rotten, know that this is the law of separation. As the teacher said in the Letter to a Friend, if cremated, the corpse will turn to ashes, or the corpse will start from swelling and eventually turn to dust, as it is said, like that.
