Do not treat it as a trivial matter, but generate reverence with all the power of faith. It is said that when Atiśa performed religious practices, he would lightly tap his feet on the ground, creating a subtle rustling sound, which would cause even those with kind hearts like ourselves to feel somewhat uneasy. The great Geshe Potowa said that going to all the places in Taklung Tang, looking up to the sky for refuge, is also a common foundation. After prostrating in this way, what should be done? Secondly, discussing the cause of the arising of the treatise: Because the virtuous disciple Jangchub Ö (Byang chub 'od) urged him, therefore, the lamp of the path to enlightenment will be thoroughly illuminated. So it is said. That is to say, the reason why Atiśa wrote this treatise is: Because the lama is pleased by practice and is a place of trust for all, therefore, the virtuous disciple named Jangchub Ö urged and requested him. Therefore, in order to make the places of acceptance and rejection on the path to attaining the fruit of perfect enlightenment, all that arises from the Buddha's teachings, like lighting a lamp to illuminate the path, making the path smooth and wide, and clearly illuminating the places of entry and exit, this treatise will thoroughly clarify. Thus he promised to write. That is to say, the reason why the lama is pleased by practice is: Sharawa said to Atiśa, when Lhatsunpa (Lha btsun pa) expressed his respect to you, you didn't even look at him. When Lhatsun Bodhirāja (Lha btsun bo dhi rA dzas) expressed his respect, you even got up and broke your vajra posture. You are the king of Tibet, called a god, but you don't even get up to pay homage to the gods, you are extremely arrogant, you scolded me like that. I asked: Then, why don't you get up for Lhatsunpa? He said: Because he is my disciple. Lhatsun Bodhirāja asked: Am I not your disciple? He just remained silent. To this, Narthangpa Pelden Dro (snar thang ba dpal ldan gro) said: This is a sign of not needing to be considerate and of being pleased. It is very important that the lama does not need to be considerate of the disciple, so it needs to be deeply understood. Just as the lama relies on strict discipline towards the disciple, it is always necessary, otherwise he cannot become a teacher who can guide to liberation and the attainment of omniscience. Lhatsunpa also said: He also values my words, so he is happy. Also, it is a place of trust for all. Sharawa said: Geshe Dromtönpa wrote letters from Ngari (mNga' ris) to the great people of Tibet, saying

When the decree to invite Jowo (Buddha image) with seeing the venerable face etc., was sent to Nyawa and Wangchuk Gon, the whole of Tibet gathered together. Sumpa Yeshe Lodro of Gyasar Gang, because he was an old man of Detsana, was requested to invite Jowo. He said, "I'm afraid we can't invite him. That Ajara is a gold-greedy person! And his bowl is also white. Maybe he's a heretic, or maybe not. It is said that when collecting gold, he says 'Ya Za Shya.' Venerable Putowa said, 'Good, very good, we must decide to fulfill his wish no matter what.' There, everyone else said, 'It's not like that, it was Lhatsunpa who invited him.' He replied, 'Oh, that's good, invite him.' Lhatsunpa's invitation would not bring anything bad, he did not think of that. Since Lhatsunpa came to Tibet, Jowo has become the object of faith for the whole of Tibet. Previously, when the Buddha attained perfect enlightenment, the lord of the gods, Indra, also offered a golden wheel with a thousand spokes and urged him to turn the wheel of Dharma, but the Buddha did not agree. Brahma also prayed in the same way, and the Buddha agreed. Brahma was not inferior to Indra in terms of offerings and status, because at that time all the people of Jambudvipa regarded Brahma as a god, so if he prayed and turned the wheel of Dharma, it would become an object of trust for all the people of Jambudvipa, that is the meaning. Similarly, at that time the whole of Tibet trusted Lhatsunpa, so if he prayed and started it, it would become an object of trust for the whole of Tibet, and this became a key instruction. In general, intelligent people follow the Dharma, and because they believe in the Dharma, they trust the author of the Dharma; dull people follow faith, and because they believe in a person, they also believe in his Dharma, and thus enter the Dharma. We must be people of faith, and follow trustworthy people, this is the foundation of political stability.' Therefore, what kind of treatise should Jowo write to make the path to enlightenment clearer? Although there are three types of enlightenment, the main one is the wisdom of knowing the exhaustion of defilements and non-arising, which is the enlightenment of the Buddha.
