Now, what is the recognition of the Buddhas of the three grounds, paths, and fruits? The initial state of reality, the Dharmadhatu, is present in all sentient beings, so the Sugata-garbha, like the full moon, is the ground, the spontaneously accomplished Buddha. From the accumulation and junction to the end of the continuum, the realization of the path, like the moon from the second to the fourteenth day, is the path, the Buddha of manifest realization. Abandoning all that is to be abandoned and perfecting all qualities, like the fifteenth moon, is the fruit, the Buddha with two purities. What are the three Kayas, Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya? The realization of emptiness is perfected, and the Dharmadhatu appears as the essence of wisdom, so all dharmas are pacified in that essence and are free from all elaborations, that is the Dharmakaya. That non-elaborate wisdom is clear as the enjoyment of wisdom in the uncontaminated bliss, that is the Sambhogakaya. Its unceasing resonance, appearing as its own form through aspiration and compassion, that is the Nirmanakaya. What is the actual practice of the Great Perfection? This present, immaculate awareness, clear and empty, without grasping, let it loose and free, and do not judge any appearance, abiding, or movement of thoughts as good or bad, rejecting or accepting, but cultivate the naked awareness of emptiness. This is the essence of the Great Perfection, the heart essence of Gyalwang Tsokye Dorje, the unsurpassed view. If you know this key point, there is no reason why you will not enter the path. Longchen Rabjampa said: Whether the six consciousnesses appear outwardly to objects, or the self-abiding awareness abides inwardly, in any case, the part of awareness is self-luminous, naked, and clearly aware. Even if it arises as a bad thought, it is naked in its self-luminosity. Even if it arises as a good thought, it is ultimately liberated and clear. Even if it abides in its own ground, it is uninterruptedly relaxed. It is not transformed by objects, not obscured by grasping, and does not engage in rejection or acceptance. That part of awareness, which is naturally clear and bright, is recognized as the primordially pure Dharmakaya. If it is not awareness, then leave it aside, but if it is awareness, then its essence cannot be other than the Dharmakaya, so recognize its essence. That is to say, awareness is obscured by strong conditions, like the five poisons, and at the moment of arising, there is nothing but awareness, so at the time of recognition, wisdom will appear even more clearly. On top of awareness, whether it is joy, displeasure, neutrality, or good or bad thoughts, whatever arises is awareness.

Apart from it, nothing else appears, so when recognized, the Dharmakaya appears nakedly. When awareness abides without distraction, the non-conceptual aspect of abiding is not intended as meditation. At that time, the clear radiance of awareness, naked, should be guarded without distraction. Also, when awareness appears towards an object, looking at whatever appears is not intended as meditation. At that time, the clear and naked aspect of awareness should be guarded without distraction. If this key point is not understood, and one thinks that both abiding and appearing are the nature of meditation, one will be mistaken. The mind merely abiding is like a deity of meditation; merely appearing is like ordinary conceptual thought; even if one meditates on that, the hope of attaining Buddhahood is slim. Here, at any time, the naked, transparent, crystal-ball-like aspect of awareness, without becoming empty, guard this itself, abide in its state without separation. The meaning of Trekchö is that awareness appears nakedly and is clearly guarded; this key point is very important, so it should be recognized. Thus it was said. Also, in the commentary on 'Resting the Mind in Meditation,' 'The Pure Chariot': Whatever obstacles arise, recognize them, and with fervent devotion to the lama, make a strong supplication for blessings, and then examine where the obstacle came from and what it harms. If none of these are found, when the transparent, naked awareness abides empty and clear, everything dissolves into the self-radiance of awareness, and this is called a yogi who knows obstacles as accomplishments. That is to say, whatever appears, whatever seems to be faults or virtues, all are nothing other than the play of awareness. Happiness is awareness, suffering is awareness, sickness is awareness, joy is awareness, there is nothing other than awareness, so understanding this key point is blissful. All my obstacles have been cleared away by this, so I am very happy. Whatever obstacles and adversities arise, the ability to completely transform them into virtuous practice is what a yogi needs. Thus it was said. In short, whatever is seen by the eye, heard by the ear, smelled by the nose, tasted by the tongue, touched by the body, thought by the mind, etc., whatever appears, whatever manifests, all phenomena that appear, whether they appear as good, bad, or middling, if one knows that the nature of reality is awareness-emptiness, nakedly abiding, one will not fear the famine of practice. The nature of reality is primordially pure, whatever appears manifests as an aid to meditation; this is the secret word of Dzogchen, for those who hold awareness.
