Memory is not being distracted from that place to other places. Mindfulness is maintaining the continuity of that undistracted object, examining whether it is correct from that state, and guarding it through vigilance. What are the three: bliss, clarity, and non-thought? The mind remains tightly in place, and the emptiness of meditation is such that it cannot be broken, that is bliss. In that state, one's own mind is empty and vast, without the defilement of conceptual thought, and remains in a single emptiness, that is clarity. Conceptual thoughts, not thinking yet thinking of other things, the movement of thoughts ceases, and the mind does not waver from emptiness, that is non-thought. What is the difference between mind and awareness? Due to the power of ignorance, not moving yet moving, not thinking yet thinking of other things, this sudden conceptual thought is called mind. Due to not being mixed with ignorance, being free from the elaboration of grasping and being grasped, and recognizing it as clear emptiness without grasping, that is called awareness. What is the meaning of essence being primordially pure, nature being spontaneously accomplished, and compassion being all-pervasive? The initial state, the emptiness without a basis for arising, is called essence being primordially pure. The energy of emptiness itself does not cease, that is called nature being spontaneously accomplished. Its power manifests in anything, pure or impure, that is called compassion being all-pervasive. The first is called awareness and emptiness being inseparable, the second is called clarity and emptiness being inseparable, and the third is called appearance and emptiness being inseparable. What is awareness, clarity, emptiness, and non-grasping? This present mind, having ceased the movement of gathering and scattering, in a state of non-thought, is clear and bright. Looking at its essence, nothing is established, it is empty and vast, neither existent nor non-existent, naked and luminous, that is called awareness, clarity, emptiness, and non-grasping. What is the meaning of self-arising wisdom? Whatever appears and arises, their essence is clear emptiness without grasping, recognizing naked awareness, that is called self-arising wisdom. What is the meaning of appearance and emptiness being inseparable, or union? The nature of all phenomena is emptiness. The self-energy of emptiness is appearance. There is no emptiness other than appearance, and there is no appearance other than emptiness, that is called appearance and emptiness being inseparable, or union. What are the three: hearing, contemplation, and realization? Relying on hearing and thinking, fully understanding the meaning of being free from the three states of arising, ceasing, and abiding of the mind.

Misunderstanding is called understanding. Relying on the guru's instructions, practicing in the continuum, thereby recognizing one's own nature, that is experience. Separated from experience, directly realizing the meaning of reality, that is realization. What is the meaning of the mind being free from the three—arising, abiding, and ceasing? The essence of the mind is empty and clear, this is called unborn. Its radiance appears in various ways, this is called unceasing. The primordial reality transcends the intellect, this is called being free from abiding. Whether it is appearance or emptiness, the awareness at any time is naked, this is free from the three—arising, ceasing, and abiding—of conceptualization. What is the meaning of "objectless awareness, self-illuminating"? The clinging to the truth of separate objects dissolves in its own place, this is called objectless awareness. What is the meaning of "maintaining the flow of ordinary awareness"? From the heart stream of the Buddha down to the individual ordinary person, the awareness that exists in the continuum, which is not altered by any sudden circumstance, that is called ordinary awareness. Recognizing it is called knowing the reality of the mind. Maintaining it is called maintaining the flow of ordinary awareness. What are the three—source, place, and destination? Searching for "where does this mind first arise from? Where does it abide in the middle? Where will it ultimately go?" This is the meaning of searching for the mind through the three—source, place, and destination. Ultimately, what is needed is an empty clarity where nothing is found. What are the three—abiding, moving, and awareness? Recognizing the reality of all phenomena that arise as clear emptiness, without grasping, and remaining steadfast in that state, that is abiding. While recognizing, engaging in activities such as transformation in that state, that is moving. Whether moving from the state of abiding or abiding from the state of moving, at any time, clearly knowing that the essence is naked clear emptiness, that is awareness. In short, it must be said that the three—abiding, moving, and awareness—are one in meaning. Alternatively, the mind not being distracted to other places, that is abiding. In the state of non-distraction, conceptual thoughts arise, that is moving. In this way, without separation, recognizing one's own mind as the sole emptiness, that is called awareness. What is the meaning of "samsara and nirvana are inseparable"? The aspect of the mind that appears is samsara. The aspect of the mind that is empty is nirvana. Samsara and nirvana are the face of one's own mind.
