That which cannot be distinguished within emptiness is called the inseparability of samsara and nirvana. What is the meaning of looking outward and looking inward? When hating an enemy, one grasps the enemy as truly existing. Similarly, for the form seen by the eye, the sound heard by the ear, the smell smelled by the nose, the taste tasted by the tongue, the touch touched by the body, and the phenomena perceived by the mind, one grasps them as truly existing as they appear, this is called looking outward. For the form that appears, gazing intently without making any acceptance or rejection, but abiding in its own nature of clear emptiness, naked and bare, this is called looking inward. All conceptual thoughts such as the six consciousnesses can be explained in this way. What is the meaning of "black mouth rambling"? For those who understand only a little, whose memory has deteriorated, and who say that the mere conceptual thoughts they do not truly recognize are vast and boundless, neither good nor bad, without distraction or grasping, this is called black mouth rambling. What is the meaning of "awareness nakedly revealed"? The past mind has ceased and is gone, the future mind has not yet arisen and is not, the present mind is realized as clear emptiness, naked and bare, without moving from its own nature, this is called awareness nakedly revealed. What is the meaning of "recognizing the flaw in an instant"? Recognizing the self-nature of this present, undefiled awareness, and maintaining that continuity, is called recognizing the flaw in an instant. What is the meaning of "the four kayas complete on top of mind, conceptual thought, affliction, and appearance"? The nature of mind is unborn, that is the Dharmakaya; its radiance is unceasing, that is the Sambhogakaya; its potential manifests in all ways, that is the Nirmanakaya; these three are inseparable in nature, that is the Svabhavikakaya. Similarly, other instances can be explained in this way. Furthermore, what is the meaning of "shamatha-vipashyana union complete on top of mind, conceptual thought, affliction, and appearance"? When conceptual thoughts gradually arise, the mind abiding on their nature is shamatha; recognizing their nature as clear emptiness, naked, is vipashyana; the inseparability of these two is the union of shamatha and vipashyana. Similarly, when desire gradually arises, the mind abiding on its nature is shamatha; seeing its nature as clear emptiness, naked, is vipashyana; the inseparability of these two

That is the union of Shamatha and Vipassana. Taking desire onto the path is also said in that way. From that, it is also inferred to those that appear as other afflictions. What is the extent of recognizing one's own nature of awareness? There are three types of this. The extent of the gradual recognition of one's own nature of awareness is: deciding that all appearances are mind, deciding that the nature of mind is emptiness, deciding in the union of the indivisibility of appearance and emptiness, and thereby realizing all dharmas as the indivisibility of awareness and emptiness or nakedly, is the extent of the gradual self-recognition. Not gradually meditating, but merely from the lama's pointing out awareness, whatever appears is nakedly realized as awareness and emptiness, that is the extent of the instantaneous awareness of one's own nature. Although awareness and emptiness are not nakedly manifested in this short and lazy life, that pure realization that arises in the bardo is the extent of the direct crossing of awareness of one's own nature. Are all appearances mind or not? According to the views of some Dagpo Kagyu, some Nyingma believe that appearances are mind, but according to our own system, appearances are not mind, and it must be considered only mind, because the key point is that all appearances are fabricated by the mind. Is conceptual thought the Dharmakaya or not? Although the Dagpo Kagyupas consider conceptual thought to be the Dharmakaya, we Dzogchenpas do not think so. However, when conceptual thought arises clearly, by looking at its essence, that conceptual thought does not need to disappear outwards, and does not need to be put into practice inwards, but that conceptual thought is bright and clear, and abides in the naked state of awareness and emptiness without grasping, that is called conceptual thought appearing as the Dharmakaya, and that must also be admitted by the Dzogchenpas. The meaning of appearances and afflictions appearing as meditation is also the same as that. What is the meaning of saying that all sentient beings are enlightened from the beginning? The initial state of the Dharmadhatu is not improved by meditation, not worsened by not meditating, not adding benefit by virtue, not bringing harm by sin, there is no boundary between samsara and nirvana, and it is separated from the partiality of elaboration, that is called the ground. Because it has existed in all sentient beings from the beginning, therefore, considering that, it is said that all sentient beings are enlightened from the beginning, and similarly, the meaning of saying that all dharmas are enlightened from the beginning is also like that.
