Although it is said that there are six types of teachers, the one who bestows empowerment, explains the tantras, and reveals the essential instructions is the root guru who possesses the three kindnesses. There is no mention in any sutras or tantras of attaining Buddhahood without relying on a guru. Previous accomplished practitioners also relied on both visible and invisible gurus, generated all the qualities of the paths and bhumis, and attained accomplishment. This is clearly evident. Therefore, although the guru is the actual Buddha who has exhausted all faults and fully realized all virtues, our individual sentient beings' minds are easily influenced by factors such as place, time, and friends. Therefore, one should first examine the guru from all distances, near and far. In the middle, one should abandon the faults of one's own deluded thoughts and evil intentions, and then rely on the guru. Finally, one should serve with the three kinds of joy and maintain the samaya without degeneration, learning all the guru's thoughts and actions like a Sāca's bowl. This is very important. Now that we have reached the degenerate age, it is difficult to find someone who fully possesses all the qualities of a guru as described in the tantras. However, the guru one relies on must possess these qualities: maintaining the three vows purely, being widely learned, possessing compassion for sentient beings, being skilled in the meaning of the outer three pitakas and the inner secret mantra Vajrayana teachings, having realized the meaning for oneself, and having perfected the qualities of abandonment and realization. For the benefit of others, one should be able to tame sentient beings according to their disposition and inclinations with inconceivable skillful means, and gather fortunate disciples through the four means of attraction. Relying on such a virtuous friend, especially a guru who reveals the profound essence of the secret mantra Vajrayana instructions, must have an unbroken lineage of ripening empowerments and liberating instructions, enabling the continuum to ripen and be liberated. One should not violate the vows and precepts of body, speech, and mind taken at the time of empowerment, and one should have few afflictions and conceptual thoughts. One's mindstream should be peaceful and gentle. One should understand all the meanings and instructions of the base, path, and fruition tantras. Having seen the signs of the generation and completion stages, one should have directly realized the meaning of reality without distortion. One should renounce this life and always dwell in solitary places. For the benefit of others, one should have a vast mind and guide beings onto the path of Dharma through various skillful means. The guru

It is crucial to rely on someone who, by practicing according to the guru's instructions, swiftly receives the blessings of the lineage and manifests qualities. Such a guru, possessing all qualities, is the representative of all past Buddhas, the source of all future Buddhas, and the emanation of all present Buddhas. The body is the Sangha, the speech is the Dharma, and the mind is the Buddha. The body is the Guru, the speech is the Yidam, and the mind is the Dakini. The body is the Nirmanakaya, the speech is the Sambhogakaya, and the mind is the Dharmakaya. Recognizing the kind root guru, who is the embodiment of all refuge, as the actual Buddha, one should prostrate with respectful body, supplicate with respectful speech, and with respectful mind, visualize the guru at the crown, throat, and heart, merging one's mind with the guru's mind. From the three doors of body, speech, and mind, without any pretense, one should please the guru with the three joys, maintaining pure faith, pure perception, and unwavering devotion, continuously and without slackening. This is of utmost importance. Even if one knows the three pitakas by heart, without devotion to the guru, there is no benefit whatsoever to one's own mindstream. As it is said: The guru is the Buddha, the guru is the Dharma, likewise, the guru is the Sangha, the guru is the doer of all, the guru is the glorious Vajradhara. Furthermore, Drikung Kyobpa Rinpoche said: On the snow mountain of the guru's four kayas, if the sun of devotion does not rise, the stream of blessings will not descend, therefore, diligently cultivate this devotion. As it is said, without doubt or hesitation towards the guru, if one prays with single-pointedness, the realization of the guru's mindstream will be transferred to oneself, thereby attaining all common and supreme accomplishments. Secondly, cultivating love and compassion towards Dharma friends: In this regard, the guru, the virtuous friend, and the Vajra friends are like guides on the path to the all-knowing liberation island, therefore, one should rely on them with love and compassion. Furthermore, Vajra friends also have internal classifications, namely four types of friends, but in this case, it refers to intimate friends, like twins. Therefore, at all times and in all circumstances, one should be without concealment or hypocrisy regarding vows, and with an attitude of love and compassion, combine all the actions of one's body, speech, and mind. Like the guru, one should regard everything the guru says as truth, and see everything the guru does as teachings, cultivating pure perception with devotion, regarding them as one's own heart.
