I, the one with perfect abandonment, after hearing, from listening to its words with reverence, to fully understanding the words, signs, and meanings, thus, as heard, the teacher's words and meanings, being certain of possessing wisdom and perfect abandonment, thereby generating reverence for the teacher. Therefore, one who wishes to compose a treatise, in order to generate reverence for the treatise and the teacher, proclaims praise. Then, is it not said that here it is necessary to understand the nature of greatness? Answer: In order to understand the nature of greatness, praising virtues is the precursor, therefore it is said, "Prostrating to that, I compose the treatise." This is indeed said for the reason of generating reverence for the treatise and the teacher. On the other hand, what is the use of greatly showing the nature of greatness at the beginning of the treatise? Because praising the virtues of the nature of greatness can be shown even without relying on composing a treatise, therefore it should be considered that one who wishes to compose a treatise proclaims the meaning of praise in order to understand the nature of greatness. Because it benefits, it is a treatise. Therefore, from the teacher's great nature arises reverence for the treatise, and from the power of the treatise, the teacher's great nature is determined and reverence arises, as previously said, it is very good. In this way, the meaning of the treatise can be understood from the praise. Or, understanding the nature of greatness by transmitting from one to another is called the actual need. But reverence transmitted from one to another is not a need. Otherwise, attaining Nirvana would also become an object of speech. Or, the need is considered to be the removal of obstacles to composing the treatise and the accumulation of roots of virtue, and there is no other need besides pacifying the mind and accumulating meritorious actions. Because it is free from obstacles, the act of composing the treatise will be completed, not to mention being connected with higher realms and definite goodness. Therefore, the teacher, in order to pay homage to the Tathagata—possessing all excellent qualities, free from faults, being the ultimate place, being the supreme field of merit and path—begins to compose the treatise. How to proclaim the virtues of the name?

If the prostration that precedes intention is combined with it, one will obtain the four excellent fruits of intention and the accumulation of merit, and by being free from obstacles and wrong paths, the treatise will be completed perfectly. If someone asks: The listeners, because of hearing, develop great faith in the great self-nature, and thus enter (the Dharma). For this reason, they can obtain the accumulation of merit, and by being free from obstacles and wrong paths, they can effortlessly achieve the ultimate in the distinctions of activities such as reading, understanding, and listening. Or, most treatise writers, when starting to write, first prostrate to the deity of intention, and then begin. This teacher also follows that most excellent path, so he wants to write a treatise. Therefore, he starts with praising the virtues and composes the prostration. Again, why does one prostrate to the deity of intention when composing a treatise? It is for auspiciousness that the noble ones do this. When starting to learn a treatise, the most common benefit is auspiciousness, that is, longevity, and the students will become intelligent and studious, and even become heroes. Others say this. Knowing the great self-nature is to show the meaning of the utmost joy that belongs to the birthplace of the self-nature, and also to generate (joy) in the hearts of others, so it is considered a way to approach the treatise. Others say this. If, at the beginning of the treatise, the teacher vows that the "treatise" is necessary in order to clearly express praise, then doing so is because darkness has not been abandoned, so the path of the treatise will become respectful. By clearly expressing praise, others will develop respect for this treatise because they understand the truth of their respective treatises. Even so, clearly expressing praise is not meaningless, because one can understand that the treatise is approaching. Starting from its meaning, one can also correctly enter this treatise, and because it is the basis (of meaning), one should generate respect for those who proclaim well-known things such as the *Dharmapada*. For those who proclaim well-known things, one cannot prove it with mere words. Asking again, what is the necessity of composing a treatise? It is to understand the characteristics of the self-nature and the common nature of all dharmas.
