Its characteristics are: Swiftly going to the Bodhi tree king's throne, and after going there, staying there for the benefit of sentient beings, attaining enlightenment, turning the great Dharma wheel, subduing all the demons and their retinues. This means that whoever holds, recites, and practices this "Samantabhadra's Conduct and Vows," the fruits of their merit and wisdom are: swiftly going to the king of trees, the Bodhi tree, and after going there, also for the benefit of sentient beings, sitting on the lion throne in order to attain enlightenment, perfectly awakening to unsurpassed enlightenment, turning the wheel of Dharma, and in order not to be hindered by demons and obstacles, subduing all the demonic hosts and armies. The meanings of these are the same as what was said above. In short, it is the benefit of obtaining all the perfections of the world and beyond. The so-called "whoever practices Samantabhadra's Conduct and Vows," etc. "Holding and" means to hold and uphold all the words and meanings without forgetting. "Declaring, that is, reciting" is just a particle. "Its ripening fruit is known by the Buddha," meaning that others such as Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not know it. The so-called "ripening fruit" refers to the fruits of holding, declaring, and reciting, such as lineage and ancestry, appearance and complexion, ability and talent, enjoyment and wealth, freedom from illness and disaster, gentle nature, sharp mind, great compassion, generosity, and so on, the maturation of many qualities among gods and humans. Its supreme ripening fruit is: "Do not doubt the supreme enlightenment," meaning that because the enlightenment of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is supreme, do not doubt that you will obtain the omniscient enlightenment of the Buddha. Now there are seven condensed dedications: the dedication of the Bodhisattva, the dedication like the Tathagata, being free from obscurations, holding the body of the Paramitas, obtaining prophecies and accomplishing the meaning of sentient beings, dedicating the roots of virtue of the teachings, and dedicating all sentient beings to be born in the realm of Amitabha. The first of these is Bo-

This is the dedication of a Bodhisattva, such as, "How does Manjushri, the brave and wise, know..." etc. Manjushri is as previously explained. "Brave" means without hesitation towards the enemy, cutting off the evil views of the enemy's collection of objects, which are the attachment to the appearance of things, with the sharp sword of immaculate wisdom. "How does he know?" means that just as the noble Manjushri, the brave and wise, understood the way of dedication, so should one dedicate. Samantabhadra is also the same; it is not only Manjushri, but also one should dedicate according to the ritual of how Samantabhadra dedicates. I will learn from them, and dedicate all these virtues. This means that I will learn from the noble Manjushri and Samantabhadra, and just as those two skilled ones dedicated, so too will I dedicate all the roots of virtue that I have done. Now, the second is to dedicate by dedicating like the Tathagatas: "All the Buddhas who have gone to the three times, by whatever dedication is supremely praised, I dedicate all these roots of virtue for the sake of good conduct." This means that whatever dedication is supremely praised and extolled by all the Buddhas who have gone to the three times is the Hundred Thousand Verses and Eighteen Thousand Verses of the Noble Perfection of Wisdom. By this, the giving is also made common with all sentient beings, and dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Because it is dedicated in this way, one cannot truly see its characteristics in any way. One dedicates in such a way: What do I give? Who gives? What is dedicated? Who dedicates? Where is it dedicated? After dedicating to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, the object of dedication is not truly seen. Why is that? Because it is empty by the emptiness of the internal; likewise, connecting it, it is empty by its own nature. Where will it be dedicated? What will be

will be dedicated. How is it completely dedicated? It should be seen as such. If dedicated in this way, it will become a well-dedicated dedication. So it is said. Also, in the Sutra of the Three Heaps, it says: Noble son, the Bodhisattva abides in this way and speaks these words. Thus, without arrogance, prostration, confession, rejoicing, exhortation, and supplication, there is no gathering. Thus, prostration, confession, rejoicing, exhortation, and supplication, there is nothing, no acceptance, no gathering. Thus, even Bodhi is not accepted, not gathered. The nature of Dharma is also without attachment, without excess, without contempt, without equality, without height, without lowness, with complete dedication. For the unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment, even the most subtle Dharma is dedicated without clinging. It should be said thus. Such and so on are spoken. In the Noble Manjushri's Sutra on Severing Obscurations, dedication appears. Also, in the Buddha Avatamsaka Sutra, the Vajradhvaja Sutra is extensively taught. With such things, whatever roots of virtue I have, for accomplishing and practicing the excellent conduct, I should dedicate, I should dedicate. Now, the third is to show the complete acceptance of a body that is free from obscurations and in accordance with the Paramitas. When I am about to die, may all obscurations be completely removed. Thus, it shows freedom from obscurations. Obscurations are obstacles to accomplishing all virtuous Dharmas such as the Paramitas. Karmic obscurations, afflictive obscurations, and resultant obscurations. When I am about to die, may I be free from and without these obscurations. Having become free from and without these obscurations, what should be done? A body in accordance with the Paramitas should be completely accepted. That is, having directly seen the Infinite Light, may I be reborn in the Sukhavati realm. Thus it is taught. Thus
