What use is a friend who turns away in times of need? What use is wealth that cannot be used? What use is a king who does not protect his subjects? What use is knowledge that does not benefit oneself or others? What use is a doctor who cannot cure illness? It is useless to have many friends whom one has never seen before, When circumstances are prosperous, everyone becomes a friend. When wealth declines and status is lost, even one's own people become enemies. A warrior in battle, cleanliness in solitude, A young wife when wealth is exhausted, Welcoming guests in a sudden famine, Know a friend in times of need. When trees lack fruit, birds abandon them, When lakes dry up, waterfowl abandon them. A woman abandons a man without wealth. When royal power declines, ministers abandon it. Bees abandon old flowers, Wild animals abandon a burnt forest, Since all beings depend on actions, Who would be a friend if one follows? A greedy person is gathered by wealth, an arrogant person by folded palms, a fool is pleased by agreement, a wise person is pleased by truth. The gods and Brahmins, supreme beings, are pleased by truth itself. Ordinary people are pleased by food and drink, A wise person is pleased by well-spoken generosity, To the holy ones, offer reverence, To the brave, offer distinctions. To the inferior, give a little, To equals, inflict harm. Whatever one's thoughts are, In accordance with that, A wise person quickly brings followers under their control. Rivers and creatures with claws, Creatures with horns, those who hold weapons in their hands, Women, the palace of a king, Do not trust them. Loss of wealth, mental anguish, Practicing evil in the home, Deceitful and contemptuous behavior, A wise person should abandon. Whose family is without fault? Who has not been afflicted by illness? Who has not seen poverty? Who possesses eternal wealth? Who is not arrogant upon finding treasure in an empty place? Who is free from arrogance? Who has not been deceived by a woman? Who is the king who is always pleasing? Who has not gone to the realm of Yama (the Lord of Death)? If begging, who is virtuous? Who has not been overcome by the decay of evil? Who has ended with happiness? Whose mind belongs to friends, relatives, and kin?

When the signs of poverty appear, people will truly understand. No matter what one does, it will not become very perfect. In times of poverty, suffering will intensify. In this situation, how should the wise act? In which place one is not respected, there is no livelihood, there are no relatives, and no knowledge can be found, one should not stay in these four situations. Sickness and poverty, famine, persecution, fighting with enemies, in the king's court or in the cemetery, whoever can provide help is a relative. Which wealth is not threatened by kings and thieves, and will not be abandoned even in death, that wealth should be accumulated well. Wealth accumulated through sacrificing life and effort, after death, fate will not be equal. Those who are greedy for wealth and do evil will be destroyed and despised by the gods. Possessions that are accumulated and hidden, repeatedly touched, miserly wealth is like sand, it only brings suffering. Naked, poor, the body like smoke, holding a skull in the hand. What appears in the world is the result of not giving alms. Servants are truly known when they are ordered, relatives when they are in poverty, friends when they are in distress, and wives when there is no food. Women need twice the food, shame is four times, effort is six times, and desire is said to be eight times. Fire cannot be satisfied by wood, the great ocean cannot be satisfied by rain, all beings cannot be satisfied by Yama, and men cannot be satisfied by women. Enjoying delicious food, associating with friends who are good at sweet talk, happiness, sons, livelihood, and wealth cannot satisfy people. Kings are not satisfied with wealth, the rich are not satisfied with wealth, etc., the ocean is not satisfied with water, the wise
