Regarding the functions of earth, water, fire, etc., intervention occurs only due to hesitation. Even if there is no such hesitation about them, however, it is not possible because there is no valid cognition to establish or refute. As it is said: What can prevent the change of hesitation? Therefore, this is established. Because the understanding of the terminology of the function of things is unobstructed, only the arising of very clear direct perception can thoroughly engage in things. And those with weak intellect engage through inference that is in accordance with it. Therefore, direct perception is valid cognition only by itself. Some say it is from others. The knowledge of yogis and the knowledge of self-awareness are valid cognition only by themselves. Because inference has the nature of certainty, it is valid cognition only by itself, as the teacher said. Therefore, the meaning is this: For the knowledge that initially and solely engages with the object, that knowledge alone is valid cognition, and other knowledge that arises later for that same object is not valid cognition, because merely holding what has already been held is not its validity. For example, due to not having realized, after seeing a pot, later, for that same object, the knowledge with further attachment, thinking "this is a pot," is the nature of memory. Or, after seeing smoke in a kitchen, etc., immediately after the inferential knowledge of "there is fire here," again, for that same thing, the inferential knowledge thinking "there is fire here," is like that. Because it is said that correct knowledge is valid cognition, it implicitly excludes insentient faculties, etc., because there is no complete elimination, so it excludes being valid cognition. Complete elimination is the very one who realizes, and that is also the inherent nature of knowledge alone. It should not be the nature of knowledge and become the nature of faculties, etc., it should be like this. These are two: direct perception and inference. The separate faculties are direct perception. Aksha (अक्ष, akṣa, root) is the faculty, namely the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body. The knowledge arising from that is direct perception, that is its meaning. So, if the knowledge relying on the faculties is not direct perception, then the knowledge of mind, etc., which will be explained,

If it is said that because it does not arise from the root consciousness, it becomes non-perception. To this, it should be said that what is said as "the transformation of each sense faculty" is understood as the reason for explaining the term 'perception.' The reason for the usage of the term 'perception' should be understood from the power of being known only for making the meaning manifest, like a lotus. Therefore, self-awareness and so on are also, because they are the nature of self-awareness of knowledge and make the meaning manifest, the expression of the term 'perception' is established. Because this measures the meaning, it is measurement. 'Following' means the meaning of 'later.' Measuring later is inference, through grasping the sign and remembering the connection of the sign-bearer, observing the hidden objects on the subject and so on, that itself should be called the term 'inference,' which should be understood from the power of fame. The word "two kinds" eliminates the wrong understandings of one, three, four, five, and six. Therefore, only perception is valid cognition, this is the view of the Charvakas. Perception, inference, and the cognition arising from sound, this is the view of the Samkhyas. Perception, inference, and the cognition arising from sound and proximity, this is the view of the Naiyayikas. Perception, inference, and the cognition arising from sound and proximity and the cognition understood by meaning, this is the view of the Vaisheshikas. Perception, inference, and the cognition arising from sound and proximity and the cognition understood by meaning and non-existence, this is the view of the Mimamsakas. By the word "two kinds," the nature of two is obtained, and "perception and inference" are said again, in order to eliminate the other nature of two besides that. Therefore, the grammarians say that perception and the cognition arising from sound are the two valid cognitions. To this, the Charvakas must also undoubtedly acknowledge that inference itself is a valid cognition, it should be understood in this way. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the definition of perception for others to understand, and the mind of others is not perception, then what is it? It is inferred from the results of the actions of body and speech, therefore, it arises from the sign of the result.
