Even in the stage of the path, just like the law of arising through inference from previous knowledge, because the sign of the result is not mistaken about the cause, it does not deceive even the unawakened consciousness, and it only has such a characteristic of appearing to be able to function. Nominal terms are also only those that have the characteristic of being determined by time, and have the characteristic of inference not being deceptive, so they are by no means grasped, so they say. Although those who speak of external objects are refuted in this way, they do not abandon their claims. Again, it is said, "Inferring the minds of others," and so on. If, by inferring the minds of others, even if one does not grasp their own nature, but because of not deceiving, if it is valid cognition, then it depends on whether it is valid cognition. How do those who know the minds of others directly understand? If, for the time being, one does not grasp the nature of the minds of others, and does not know, then at that time the object of this direct perception will be for the sake of others. So, if one does not understand, how are those yogis considered to know directly? In order to make an inductive argument, it is said, "How is it direct perception," and so on. They think that direct perception is to grasp one's own nature through things. If things do not grasp their own nature, then what kind of direct perception would that be? Because things do not grasp their own nature, it is clear that it is valid cognition. So, if one does not grasp, how is it valid cognition? They said, thinking that the nature of this valid cognition is the cause of grasping one's own nature, which is a doubt belonging to the dark side. The proponents of established tenets say: Because the state has not changed, the object of yogis and those who have not abandoned the conceptual thought of the grasper and the grasped, know the minds of others, "again," and so on. For those yogis who have not abandoned the conceptual thought of the grasper and the grasped, it is said in that way. Their knowledge of the minds of others is valid cognition because it does not deceive in nominal terms, just as we and others see forms and so on, but not because of grasping one's own nature. It is said, "The cause of not abandoning the conceptual thought of the grasper and the grasped is because the state has not changed," like this their

Therefore, the characteristic of the Alaya-vijnana has not changed. Its transformation means abandoning the attachment to the duality of the grasped and the grasper. If knowing others' minds is not grasping one's own nature, then how can it have a clear appearance? Therefore, it is mentioned, "By the power of yoga," etc. Through the power of meditation, yogis can understand others' minds, and they can clearly follow the various aspects of others' minds. For example, by the power of karma and the blessings of deities, those who see true things in dreams have a consciousness that clearly manifests the aspects of things. Similarly, if someone thinks that yogis can understand others' minds solely through the power of meditation, then why can't their minds grasp their own nature? Therefore, it is mentioned, "For them, it is only the object of knowing others' minds," etc. Even if it arises from the power of meditation, it cannot take the nature of others' minds as an object, because such yogis have not abandoned the duality of the grasped and the grasper. If yogis cannot understand the nature of others' minds, then how can they be sure that they understand others' minds? Therefore, it is mentioned, "They are also only the appearance of their own minds," etc. Yogis also only through their own minds and appearances being the same as the aspects of others' minds, can they be sure that they understand others' minds, and establish names. If it is not grasping one's own nature, then how can it be direct perception? How can it be valid cognition? Therefore, it is mentioned, "Direct perception is following its aspect," etc. Because it can clearly follow the aspects of others' minds, it is considered direct perception; because it is not deceptive, it is considered valid cognition. Then, for the Tathagatas who have abandoned the duality of the grasped and the grasper, what is the knowledge of others' minds that they possess? Is it taking the nature of others' minds as an external object? Or is it not taking it as an object? If it is taking it as an object, then what is the meaning of that?
